LOCAL
REPORT
|
From
the Director's Desk
While Bonaire is being promoted
at different trade/consumer
shows and many of you are
traveling, I am happy to
report that the Continental
Flights show strong results
and continued growth. It
looks like we have a winner
and the possibilities of
more cooperation appear to
be on the horizon. By using
Houston as a gateway, we
have opened a whole new market
for Bonaire. TCB has committed
itself to strengthening Bonaire's
position in our tested markets
as well and we are continuously
striving to do that. The
Scuba Tour Gold sponsorship
2006, whereby Bonaire is
the exclusive destination
being promoted, and the Washington
Times 8 page Bonaire supplement,
are recent promotional steps
where we create opportunities
to promote your product while
also promoting the destination!
Grab these opportunities
that are presented to you.
On the other side of the
Americas, our South American
Market shows a positive year
start with a group of approximately
150 guests from Venezuela,
but mainly from Brazil, visiting
at the beginning of this
month. This visit is a result
of efforts and investments
in these markets by TCB South
America together with various
island properties.
On the other side of the
world, our European market
continues to consolidate
Bonaire's position in the
Netherlands and expand through
among other intensified promotion
in our secondary markets;
Germany, England, Denmark,
Norway and Finland. Top of
the line promotion through
modern tools such as www.visitbonaire.tv,
are proving to be successful
in attracting visitors.
As far as the final figures
for 05, we will show a positive
increase in arrivals. 05
figures should be ready for
release in a few weeks, while
2006 figures are up to date
and also ready for release
in a few weeks from now.
As anticipated, this year
has started with a decrease
in arrivals in January 2006.
A regional slowdown and a
more difficult airlift situation
from the US market need to
be taken into consideration.
On a positive note, we have
been in positive territory
for the past 5 years (including
05)!
Bonaire Dive Into Adventure
is also on track and we are
putting the final touches
on our plans. The participating
partners are taking bookings
and we will keep you informed
as to our progress.
Lastly, I would like to
elaborate a bit more on the
new tax being introduced
in Bonaire that will be called
the "Island" tax.
The Tourism Corporation
Bonaire has been working
closely with key partners
to obtain the necessary information
for implementation and communication.
This as part of the communication
plan developed by TCB, whereby
key partners are informed
and consulted on this matter.
We are happy with the input
and thank our partners for
this. While, some details
are being finalized, the
following provides some key
information on the tax to
be paid upon departure from
the island by "residents" and
on the "Island Tax",
the tax to be paid by non
residents. Together with
our overseas offices we will
do our utmost, and are ready
and well prepared to do so,
to support this new tax structure
through proper communication!
This is essential for the
implementation being carried
out, and essential for our
island as a whole.
The new tax to be paid upon
departure by "residents" and
the new "Island Tax" in
a snapshot:
In late December 2005 the
Island Council of Bonaire
passed a law changing its
tax structure and put in
place a new, simplified one.
The new tax structure will
divide visitors into two
main categories; residents
and non-residents. The applicable
Island Tax is determined
based on where the person
was born, their age and then
whether the person is traveling
within the Netherlands Antilles
(N.A.) and Aruba or outside
of the N.A. and Aruba after
departing Bonaire.
Under the new, simplified
tax structure visitors (identified
as "non residents")
will no longer pay a hotel
room tax, car rental tax,
nor airport departure tax,
but instead will pay just
one "Island
Tax" of $75.00 per adult
and $37.50 for children 12
and under. The following
provides an overview of taxes
to be paid by residents as
well as non residents under
various circumstances:

The Tourism Corporation
Bonaire will keep you informed
of developments with regards
to the new Island Tax for
Bonaire. The above is a snapshot
and some factual information
that we wanted to share with
you at this stage. The tax
has not been implemented
yet and TCB keep you up to
date you as to the introduction
of the tax.

Bonaire Ambassadors
AWARDED
GOLD: |
David
Morgan
|
David
Morgan has been traveling
to Bonaire for the
past 27 years and
has recently received
the golden medal
for his visits to
our island during
the last 27 years.
David
has traveled to almost
every island in the
Caribbean over the
last three decades
- Bonaire has always
been his favorite.
He suspects that
he has visited Bonaire
more than 60 times
during that time
period. While he
appreciates being
formally acknowledged
as a Bonaire Ambassador,
informally he has
been an ambassador
ever since his very
first visit.
Whenever
they asked him which
island he would recommend
in the Caribbean,
he consistently told
folks to visit Bonaire.
When asked why he
recommends Bonaire,
besides going into
details about the
fun loving, warm,
friendly people,
the laid back atmosphere
and, of course, the
world class diving,
his snapshot answer
was “there
is no traffic light
on the island.”
For
Tourism Corporation
Bonaire it is a
great pleasure
to have David as
a Gold Bonaire
Ambassador. “We
thank Mr. Morgan
for his numerous
visits, the positive
word of mouth he
has helped spread
and will continue
to spread, a true
Bonaire Ambassador” according
to Ronella Croes,
Director of Tourism
Corporation Bonaire.

SILVER: |
The
Slavin Family |
This
is our 19th consecutive
January in Bonaire.
We fell in love with
the island, its underwater
beauty, and the warm
friendly people. We
started bringing our
children15 years ago,
and now we also come
with our grandchildren.
We have also spent
several summer weeks
here. We really feel
that Bonaire is like
a second home for us.
Although it can be
challenging to get
here from U.S., it’s
definitely worth it!
Good luck for a bright
future!!

AWARDED
BRONZE: |
Rudy
van Geldere |
Rudy
van Geldere, our
recent ambassador,
is a fanatic and
experienced underwater
photographer. Rudy
has been taking
underwater pictures
for 31 years now!
Upon his 4th dive
he already had
his underwater
camera with him.
He advises though,
to start with underwater
photography after
approximately 100
dives.
Rudy
first visited the
island 15 years
ago upon invitation
from Pascal and
Kali de Meyer,
and, since then,
he’s been
visiting on a yearly
basis where he
stays for a period
of 2 months on
island.
Rudy
says that Bonaire
is a marvelous
nature island,
both on-land and
below the water.
The underwater
nature belongs
to one of the best
and most beautiful
in the Caribbean.
Rudy
has produced two
underwater photography
books, from which
his last one includes
many of the underwater
scenery of Bonaire.
The book is titled “4000
Duiken in Beeld” and
is for sale at
different dive
shops on island,
among them Divi
Dive shop.
Rudy
has won different
underwater photography
competitions worldwide,
his first one in
1988, and he instructs
people also on
how to take underwater
pictures.
Rudy
highlights that
something he does
not want to leave
out of this piece,
is the People of
Bonaire, friendly
people with good
heart!
Rudy’s
wife is also in
love with Bonaire
and they both share
this passion.
For Tourism Corporation
Bonaire it is a
great pleasure
to have Rudy as
a Bonaire Ambassador. “We thank Mr. van Geldere and his wife for their numerous
visits, and are delighted with their decision to return year after year to
our beautiful, tranquil and friendly island. We are confident that Rudy can
find plenty of material in Bonaire, for his passion which is underwater photography” according
to Ronella Croes, Director of Tourism Corporation Bonaire.

Peter
and Sigrid
Assor, Sweden |
Peter
and Sigrid Assor
from Sweden have
been visiting
Bonaire for 15
years, with a
total of 16 visits.
They had heard
about Bonaire
through a cousin
living in Caracas,
Venezuela. Since
being introduced
to the island,
they always wanted
to return, and,
in fact, kept
coming back all
the time. Why?
Because of the
quietness and
nice people.
One of their
first friends
in Bonaire was
Pascal de Meyer.
Receiving
awards as Bonaire
ambassadors is
a real honor,
but they have
been promoting
the island since
they first visited.
Many of their
friends have
followed their
advice to visit.
They
have made quite
some friends
through their
visits, whom
they meet year
after year during
the same time
on Bonaire.
They
have made about
800 dives in
Bonaire and feel
a bit sorry that
the Windjammer
is closed now.
As
long as their
health permits,
Peter and Sigrid
will be back
again and again!
For
Tourism Corporation
Bonaire it is
a great pleasure
to have Peter
and Sigrid as
Bonaire Ambassadors. “We
thank Mr. and
Mrs. Assor for
their numerous
visits, and are
delighted with
thier decision
to return year
after year to
our beautiful,
tranquil and
friendly island” according
to Ronella Croes,

Diveshow
DuikVaker Quite Successful
After
a breakthrough last year in which the organization
changed the format of Holland’s leading
dive show DuikVaker, Utrecht is back on
track again. We welcomed more visitors
than last year. It is no surprise Bonaire,
being a top-dive destination, generated
a lot of booth-visitors. TCB–staff
gave them lots of info on our island, while
representatives of the private sector promoted
Bonhata as well as their own properties.
We know a lot of Dutch divers will find
their way to Bonaire this year.

BBC
Coverage Generated Free Publicity in
the UK
A few months ago we welcomed
a TV-crew from BBC on Bonaire. They
filmed a documentary on the Dutch Caribbean
in which Bonaire was featured. This
month BBC broadcasted it in the UK.
In addition, the Bonaire-show was presented
on their Web site. This was great promotion
putting Bonaire in the limelight in
this so called secondary market (in
terms of marketing). See for yourself
at http://www.bbc.co.uk/holiday/destinations/bonaire.
ANWB
Kampioen Covers Bonaire
With
over 3.8 million subscribers, ANWB Kampioen
is by far Holland’s leading
magazine in travel and tourism. This
month the magazines featured an article
on Bonaire starring Dutch celebrity and
Bonaire-fan Henny Huisman. The information
department of TCB Europe had a big job
handling all the requests for information
that we had to reprint our leaflets and
flyers…TCB Europe wishes to thank
Henny Huisman for his kind promotional
work for Bonaire.
Promotion
DIAB Started
TCB Europe kicked off the
promotion from DIAB. All though it is
semi-optimized given the fact we could
start this winter instead last summer,
TCB Europe managed to generate a lot
of attention. We do know European tourists
tend to book their holiday quite some
months in advance, but it seems we booked
some of them right on time for DIAB 2006.
Windsurf
Promotion Started
Last month Dutch and German freestylers
challenged Tati and Tonky Frans at
their ‘home court’ Sorobon
Beach. Germany sent Andre Paskowski,
while Ruben Pretresie (see picture)
filled in the Dutch gap after Kevin
Mevissen was injured in South Africa.
TCB’s Sandrine Koopman joined
them together with a TV-crew and journalists
to watch their heats. Next Spring TCB
Europe will further roll out this promotion
in Holland and Germany. To be continued.
We wish to thank Kontiki, Divi, Budget
and KLM for their kind support.

Prize
Winners Enjoyed Bonaire
As
we always tell tourists: as member
of our so called target groups, we
know for sure you will embrace Bonaire.
And tell all your friends how
wonderful our island is. We do not
want to attract just anybody to Bonaire,
given the peace and quite on the
island; we need to attract the right
type of tourist. We call them post
materialists. Not just any post materialist,
but the well-off post materialist.
How do you know one when you see
one? These people are nice and friendly.
They take care of people and nature
surrounding them. No wonder the prize
winners of the online viral contest
sent TCB Europe a postcard just to
say thank you…

New
Record visitbonaire.tv
Bonaire’s not
only leading in innovative marketing.
After launching the Web site visitbonaire.tv and
the theme sites on diving and kiting,
the trade and PR-campaign started.
Over and over again, TCB Europe
is paying attention to these Web
sites to attract new visitors.
The press picked it up with links
all over the Internet. TCB Europe
is proud the Web site reached an
all time high last month and is
curious what March will bring us.
The PR and promotion still continues.

Patricia Rowan from
the NYC office worked the Bonaire booth
at the New York Times Travel Show Feb.
24-26, 2006. Booths for Bonaire and PADI
(the Scuba Tour’s other Gold
Sponsor) were located just adjacent to
the highly trafficked Scuba Tour Pool,
where “Big
Wave Dave” and dive retailers from
the 7 UPS organization introduced intrepid
New Yorkers to the exhilarating sport of
Scuba Diving in the comfort of a heated
pool on the trade show floor. With the
benefit of being right next to the pool,
Bonaire had access to anyone and everyone
who was interested in the sport or who
already knew how to dive and were interested
in planning their next dive trip. Additionally,
Patricia had the opportunity to speak to
many past Bonaire visitors who came by
the booth to say “hi” and see
what was new on the island.
Wave
II of Attitudes and Usage Survey Launched
Feb. 27
Wave I of the Attitudes and
Usage Survey, launched Feb. 6, reached
the 1,000 required sample size in less
than one week. Targeting the past visitors,
Wave I probed visitor’s
attitudes toward and impressions of the
island based on their personal experience.
Wave II of the survey which launched Feb.
27 will be conducted among those consumers
who have inquired about Bonaire (by calling
the 800 number or going on the Web site)
but have never actually visited the island.
Wave II will measure their attitudes toward
and impressions of the island based on
what they have seen on the Web site, on
TV, on-line or what they have read in print
magazines and newspapers. The results from
Wave I and Wave II will be tabulated individually,
and then they will also be compared to
each other. Results are expected from both
Wave I and Wave II by the end of March.
Dive
Into Adventure Bonaire 2006 Preparations
Continue
In February, a number of
tasks were undertaken by TCB-NYC in conjunction
with event sponsors and TCB-Bonaire.
They included finalizing/updating
information for inclusion on Dive Into
Adventure Bonaire Web site, finalizing
and distributing the FAQ sheet
on the event, continuing to work
with official tour operators, sending
an email to past Dive Festival
participants inviting them to attend
this year’s event, drafting
a new press release on the event,
distributing the event press release
at consumer shows in New York (New
York Times Travel Show), Washington,
DC (Adventure Show) and Chicago (Our
World Underwater). Additionally the
official event flyers/brochures were
printed and distributed to all three
official tour operators for the event
as well as Carol Bradovchak who is
coordinating their distribution at
consumer shows through May 2006.

participation at specific trade and
consumer shows and discounts offered
for member countries were also reviewed
at length.
A presentation by the president
of an organization called “Travel

highlighted upcoming events taking place
in Bonaire between April and September
2006.
Press
Releases
As part of the ongoing press release
program, Adams Unlimited researches,
writes and prepares a steady stream
of releases for mailings to the
media for applicable editorial
coverage based on editorial calendars
and the need to disseminate timely
news. In February two press releases
were written and distributed. The
first release detailed the new
photos available on Bonaire’s
Web site for dive professionals. This
release was distributed on Dive Newswire
on February 1st. The Bonaire Briefs
press release included information
gathered from hotels, dive centers,
tour companies, restaurants and other
businesses on island. The release was
distributed to the media in mid-February
2006, was posted on www.InfoBonaire.com
and a special condensed version was posted
and distributed on Dive Newswire in February
as well.
Press
Visits
In February, Adams worked with
a number of writers for press visits
during the first quarter of 2006:
1. Upon his return contacted
writer/photojournalist Tim Rock as follow
up. Mr. Rock visited Bonaire in January/February
2006 to gather information in order to
write the Lonely Planet diving and snorkeling
guide to Bonaire. This is the first
edition of this new guidebook. Photos
and information gathered may also be
used in Sport Diving magazine.
2. Upon her return from Bonaire followed-up
with writer Barb Roy. She visited Bonaire
in late January/early February 2006 to
gather information for articles in Northwest
Dive News, Northeast Dive News, Sport
Diver Magazine, Wave Length Magazine,
X-Ray Dive Magazine.
3. Worked on finalizing
arrangements for the press visit of
writer Christina Colon, who will visit
Bonaire March 3-8, 2006. Mrs. Colon
will be gathering information to update
the nine-page Bonaire chapter in the
Frommer’s Caribbean Ports
of Call guidebook. She will be visiting
hotels and restaurants, and learning
about and participating in activities
of interest to cruise ship passengers.

The office continues lobbying
with DAE and the South American airlines for
those agreements needed to have better airlift
to Bonaire. Yasmin from TCB met on Feb
21st with Julio Ordonez Triana, Avianca's IATA
Interline Manager. The airline is not only
important for the Brazilian market, but also
for the Colombian with 4 daily flights from
Bogotá to Caracas and other
direct flights to Aruba and Curacao. Colombia
last year experimented with an increase of
visitors to the island of Bonaire.
