NEW
U.S. RE-ENTRY RULES GO INTO EFFECT
DECEMBER 31, 2005
In
an effort to strengthen border
security and facilitate entry into
the United States for U.S. citizens
and legitimate foreign visitors,
beginning December 31,
2005 the U.S. Department of State will
require that travelers to
and from the Caribbean have a valid
passport or other secure, accepted
document (Border Crossing
Card, SENTRI, NEXUS or FAST cards)
to enter or re-enter the United
States. This
is a change from prior travel requirements
and will affect all U.S. citizens
entering the United States from
countries like
Bonaire, who do not currently
possess valid passports. This
new requirement will also affect
certain foreign nationals who currently
are not required to present a passport
to travel to the U.S. For
more information and updates visit the
U.S. Department of State web site
at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html.

FIRST
BONAIRE JAZZ FESTIVAL WAS IN FULL SWING
AT THE END OF MAY
Many enjoyed the talents of:
Denise
Jannah--“This woman can make
you dream, cry and fall in love.
What more could you desire” (The
Music Advocate). “Jannah’s
voice is fine, rich, certain and teeming
with a candor undiminished by the artifice
of record-making” (Down Beat).
She was almost everywhere in the landscape
of jazz--at the international jazz
festivals, touring around the US and
Europe, and most recently Israel. She
started with the general repertoire of
jazz and is now concentrating on her
own compositions; her last CD, “Gezongen
Gedichten” (Singing Poems) is a
great hit. Listen to the voice of great
ladysinger, born in Surinam, living in
the Netherlands and with her heart in
the world of jazz.
Ced Ride--You could write an interesting
book about Ced Ride. He is a phenomenon,
a multi artist: painting, singing, writing
and also a theatre-man. His musical interest
is broad, from tumba to jazz, but is
always connected to the place where his
heart, home and his cultural identity
is: the Antilles. There is no further
introduction needed on the Harbourtown
Bonaire Jazz Festival; everybody knows
and loves Ced Ride. Look out for “Yo
y el son” a
new cd, which is under construction now.
Cedric Dandare--We are lucky that Cedric
is back in Curacao now after 25 years
being abroad. He is really the first
man who composed jazz with a splendid
mix of Antillean music. Playing almost
everywhere, including the North Sea Jazz
Festival, he made cd’s with Izaline
Calister, Randal Corsen and many others.
At this Jazz Festival he did some special
compositions of his own and a surprising
duet with Denise Jannah.
Avila Blues Houseband--For more
than 10 years already, this group was
the nucleus of jazz at the Avila Blues
Café in
Curacao and experienced side-man of many
stars at the café and at festivals.
This time they were the accompanying
band of Denise Jannah and Ced Ride. Ronchi
Matthews, keyboard. Hershel Rosario,
bass. Marlon Conradus, drums and a special
guest, Pierre Dunker on bass.
Cuban Express--The memories of the
Buena Vista Social Club of Cuba will
never be surmounted but, Cuban Express
does take you back in that atmosphere.
Cuban and Latin music mixed with all
those jazzy elements which made that
music to a hype. Cuban Express, musicians
from Curacao and some Cubans do remind
us of an important event in jazz.
X-Hale--These four young guys, born
in Germany and for many years living
in the Netherlands, are connected
through their jazz study in the 90’s
at conservatorium in Arnhem, which launched
X-hale in 2004: modern jazz, with some
aversion to funk and drum’n bass
elements. Powerful, swinging jazz, straightforward
with a refreshing own versatile sound.
A promising quartet!
Freewinds Band featuring Stacey Francis--The
Freewinds band, since 1988, is a very
special group. They played with many
great stars like Chick Corea and John
Novello. They are well known guests in
the harbour of Bonaire and made great
shows in the jazzclub of Bonaire with
local artists. They will be present in
our festival with a very special vocalist;
Stacey Francis. The band includes Steven
Schlussel, bass & vocals. John Politakis,
drums and Patrick Zagury, guitas & vocals
and some additional guests from Curacao
and Bonaire.
Delbert Bernabela Band--The band is
a collection which has blossomed over
the years performing and composing together
in different settings, which has produced
several fine recordings. Although everyone
has performed internationally, this will
be the first international outing for
the band in this setting. A selection
of CDs were available for
sale during the festival (Latin and Krioyo)
Delbert Bernabela, saxophones and flute.
Franklin Granadillo, trumpet. Johannes
Croes, keyboard. Ivan Quandus, bass and
Carlos Bislip, drums.
Local artists--Latin Quartet, Stingrays,
Bonaire Jazz Trio

BONAIRE
MANY MINUTES TV COVERAGE
This
month Bonaire was “all over” Dutch
Television. In addition to the weekly show
of Henny Huisman (Huize Huisman), there
was also the broadcast from AVRO Wilde
Wereldreizen. This TV-show, sponsored by
the WWF, was completely dedicated to Bonaire’s
wildlife. Angela Schijf, one of Holland’s
leading TV-personalities, went to our island
to see for herself how Bonaire manages
wildlife protection without compromising
tourism. As we all know it is a difficult
balance, however Bonaire sets a good example
to the rest of the world. Bonaire was the
one and only Caribbean destination selected
for this WWF-project. TCB Europe wishes
to thank Habtitat, Caribbean Club, Stinapa,
STCB, and, of course, Rolando for their
wonderful coorporation to help make this
happen.

HUIZE
HUISMAN GENERATES OFFLINE PUBLICITY
Just like AVRO’s
Wilde Wereld, the TV-show Huize Huisman
generated a lot of free publicity in
Dutch magazines and newspapers. Host
Henny Huisman, a big Bonaire-fan, was
featured with his guests several weeks
in a row. This really put Bonaire in
the spotlight.

ROB
AL TO CTO GERMANY
In order to make the necessary
arrangements to ensure further growth
from our secondary markets, Rob Al went
to CTO Germany to discuss joint promotions
for the German market. As we all know,
we can attract divers from this market.
Additionally, the dual
destination concept with South America
is quite an opportunity. After
the summer we’ll
see the effect of Rob’s efforts
in Frankfurt (Germany).
PAN-EUROPEAN
B2B-CAMPAIGN BONAIRE-IN-MOTION LOOKS
PROMISING
In mid-May, the Pan-European
B2B-campaign started to inform Europe
that we launched the new Bonaire-in-Motion
section on InfoBonaire.com.
Immediately we saw an increase in visitors
and, more importantly, we received enthusiastic
reactions from all over the Continent.
Many tour operators are planning to link
Bonaire-in-Motion to their own web sites.
This is the best opportunity for them
to inform their clients about our island.
Phase 2 of this B2B-campaign will kick
off in a few weeks. One of the subjects
will be the special trade section on
this web site. This section is exclusively
open for trade professionals and features
some very special video material.

UPCOMING:
TRAVEL TRADE SUMMER PROMOTION
In June TCB Europe will
launch its Travel Trade Summer Promotion.
Targeting all major travel agencies
in the Netherlands, it will ensure
Bonaire once again becomes most
visible and give travel agents the
opportunity to win a trip to Bonaire.
KLM is participating in this promotion.
After this rollout, TCB Europe will
start to prepare the annual (large)
fall promotion, not only in the Netherlands,
but throughout Europe.
In June and July TCB
Europe will once again launch new e-marketing
tools. A small and tiny island like
Bonaire has to have a head start in
e-marketing to make sure its target
groups are well informed on Bonaire.
Next to PR, e-marketing is one of the
key issues. After guerilla marketing
and Bonaire-In-Motion, Bonaire
will be promoted in other innovative
ways to make sure we get maximum return
on our marketing euros. To be continued.

PRESS VISITS
We
began working with Men's Journal Articles Editor
Larry Smith on a press visit to Bonaire June 8 - 13, 2005. Larry will
be on island to gather information for
a story on learning to windsurf and also
wants to try out diving with a resort
course. Men's
Journal is a nationally
distributed glossy general interest,
active lifestyle magazine for men with
a focus on adventure, travel, equipment,
sports, fitness and style. The magazine has
a circulation over 700,000.
EDITORIAL HIGHLIGHTS
Miami Herald
(circulation 386,316)
Bonaire’s
exotic night diving story, written by Brian
Bakst of the Associated Press, appeared in
the April
24, 2005 issue of the Miami Herald and the online edition
of The Tallahassee Democrat on April
25, 2005. The article begins by clarifying that
although a few people have fled the waters
of Bonaire screaming “Shark!,” there
is no shark, it is actually a 6-foot-long
tarpon that regularly skirts of Bonaire looking
for small fish , shrimp, and crab to feed
on. There
is no need for night divers and snorkelers
to worry about the tarpon because they can
help it out by using their flashlights to
illuminate food for it. The
article includes other fascinating sites
to see underwater in Bonaire at
night including blossoming corals and pointy
sea urchins. This
article is available online at www.tallahassee.com/living/travel/11449066.htm.
American Way (circulation 325,000)
Bonaire’s
topside was highlighted in the May
2005 issue of American Airline’s
in-flight magazine American
Way. The
article features Outdoor Bonaire and cave
expeditions as a fun activity for non-divers
as well as divers who are decompressing. The article mentions that Outdoor Bonaire
also offers nature hikes under the full moon,
cross-island bike rides, and coming soon – rappelling
down a 19th-century lighthouse. Contact information for Outdoor Bonaire
is listed. This
article is not available online, however,
other articles from American Way magazine
are available at www.americanwaymag.com.
Scuba Diving (circulation 185,000)
In
an article featured in the May 2005 issue of Scuba Diving magazine, Bonaire is
celebrated as being the park-and-dive capital
of the world. Great
descriptions of shore diving are given in
this article including that the beach slopes
down to 30 feet where the reef drops off
gradually down to another sandy plain at
about 140 feet. However,
there is no need to dive that deep because
every imaginable species of Caribbean reef
fish are clearly visible from shallower depths
because visibility averages 60 to 100 feet
year round. Details about several dives sites are
given and upcoming events in Bonaire are
also listed. This article is not available online,
however, other articles featuring Bonaire are
available at www.scubadiving.com.
Physicians’ Travel & Meeting Guide
(circulation 142,267)
Bonaire’s
easy diving conditions were featured in the April 2005 issue of Physician’s Travel & Meeting Guide. The
article suggests that children can get a
feel for breathing underwater by testing
out their skills with a snorkel and mask
in any of the shore dive sites, while parents
and exercise their dive skills at great boat
dive sites. Windsurfing in Bonaire is
also mentioned as another fun water activity
to try while in Bonaire. Bonaire’s
web site is listed along with contact information
for Buddy Dive Resort. This
article is not available online, however,
articles from the current issue of this magazine
are available online at www.ptmg.com.
Sport Diver (circulation 100,000)
Bonaire was
featured in the May
2005 issue of Sport
Diver magazine in an article about Holland’s
Georgina Wiersma and Peter Verhoog’s
and their journey to Bonaire. Being
from Holland,
the team always procrastinated going diving
in Bonaire, thinking
that going from one Dutch-ruled realm to
another wouldn’t seem like an adventure. However,
they were pleasantly surprised when they
finally experienced the diving and the rest
that the island has to offer. The
article describes the wonderful experience
that the two had and gives details about
a number of dives that they went on while
in Bonaire. They give a list of their favorite 5
dive sites and recommendations of what type
of gear to have. Ten large beautiful color photos accompany
this article. This
article is not available online, however,
other articles featuring Bonaire are
available at www.sportdiver.com.
Sky
Writings, Air Jamaica’s
Inflight Magazine (circulation 30,000)
Windsurfing
in Bonaire was highlighted
in the May/June 2005 issue of Air Jamaica’s
in-flight magazine Sky
Writings. Writer
Candyce Stapen traveled with her family to Bonaire and
wrote about the calm conditions that Bonaire has
to offer as a great place to learn to windsurf. Ms.
Stapen lists the contact information for Windsurf
Place and Jibe City as
places to get lessons and equipment. Ms.
Stapen also mentions Kids Sea Camp is a great
activity for children to participate in while
families are vacationing in Bonaire this
summer. The contact information for Kids Sea
Camp is also listed. In
a separate article, Bonaire’s
King of the Caribbean event
is highlighted with information about the
Junior World Freestyle Championships. Contact
information for Ann Phelan is listed. These
articles are not available online, however,
other articles from the May/June 2005 issue
of Sky Writings magazine are available at www.airjamaica.com/skywriting.
KidScreen Magazine (circulation 11,500)
Writer
Nancy Lees of KidScreen Magazine tells about her scuba
diving adventures in the March
2005 issue. Lees
describes an experience that she had while
recently diving in Bonaire involving
her descending directly into the middle of
a huge school of fish being herded by a couple
of large tarpons. This
article is available online with a paid subscription
at www.kidscreen.com.
Northwest
Dentistry (circulation 3,000)
The
March/April 2005 issue of Northwest Dentistry
featured an editorial by Dr. William E. Stein,
who wrote about his trip to Bonaire in
February 2005. Before 2004, Dr. Stein had visited the
island annually for the previous 21 years. Although
he does not give an explanation for why his
string of annual visits was “sadly
broken,” he was glad to go back to
the island. He writes that he and his wife had a
fantastic week, airline connections were “perfect,” he
enjoyed the warmth of the sun, and that he
rejoiced in returning to diving. He even brought back a painting of the
seascape of Bonaire to
hang in his office. This article is available to read online
at www.mndental.org/newsletter/departments/article_2.
Caribbean Compass
(online circulation)
Bonaire was
featured in an article about cruising around
the ABC islands in the April 15, 2005 edition of
the online newsletter Caribbean
Compass. The
article begins with instructions for cruisers
arriving at the port or mooring at a marina
and adds that anchoring is strictly prohibited
because the island is almost all a marine
reserve. Kralendijk
is described as a clean and colorful city
in “pristine condition.” The article also noted that there are
an abundance of restaurants to choose from
to enjoy several good meals and that the
island offers a wider selection of products
and services compared to other islands. Diving
is also highlighted in the article which
notes that some of the best diving can be
done right off the back of a cruise ship
and that there are a number of dive operators
offering their services at reasonable prices. To
read this article please visit www.caribbeancompass.com/belowbelt.htm.

BRAZIL
MEANS DIVERS
Returning from Brazil , Yasmin Pérez
confirmed the potential of this market. According
to PADI, it consists of some 200,000 certified
divers, of which some 80,000 are frequent travellers,
Osmar Rodriguez from Diving
Adventure, one of the main dive operators
in Sao Paulo, tell us.
The market is there…with many large
diving schools that cater to international groups
and where Bonaire is always mentioned on its trips
billboards as we could see during our visit
there. This is a growing market that is characterized
by 6/7 nights stay on island and an economy that
is improving with the drop of the dollar value.
It also boasts a prestigious diving magazine, Mergulho, that
is found in all the diveshops, and it also has
a very important event called Sao Paulo
Boat Show, which
is taking place in October and where Bonaire
will participate with an official presentation
to the diving sector.
The Brazil market has been our focus since
2004 and this visit has permitted TCB to identify
the key people and give them all the support
and allowed us to initiate the follow up that
will reopen the market.
The airlift from Rio and Sao Paulo uses Avianca
with regular flights on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
and Saturday via Bogotá and Aruba, along
with VARIG with 2 weekly flights via Caracas
toward Aruba, and with the good news that soon
there will be an augmentation
this year to 4 weekly flights on the route
instead of 2; both airlines' flights then connect
to Bonaire with BonairExpress. Nevertheless,
we are aware that these connections present
difficulties, and we are always looking for alternatives.
The visit to Brazil was carried out with a
busy work agenda that Yasmin shared with their
colleagues of Sun Rentals (Jose & Muys) and
Lagoen Hill (Tom). They were all well received
and report excellent feedback from this South
American diving market.

GUEST EXHIBIT OPENS AT CINNAMON
ART GALLERY
On
Saturday, May 28th, Cinnamon
Art Gallery presented their
latest Guest Artist, Wilna Groenenboom,
and her creative blends of driftwood
and imagery. Wilna is an art teacher
at the SGB - the Bonaire high school.
In her own words:
"This is the second exhibition of a SGB-teacher in the Cinnamon Art Gallery.
At the SGB I teach art to the upper groups of VSBO and HAVO.
"This exposition consists of driftwood, combined with pictures from above and
under the water surface. The material is found while walking along the shores
and it varies from wood to plastic, metal and even bones from donkeys and goats.
When thinking of an "object" I try to leave the found material intact as much
as possible. My work varies from objects, picture frames (with my own pictures),
lamps to tables.
"My passion started 5 years ago at the "Tene Bonaire Limpi" ("Keep Bonaire
Clean")
weekend. The first frames and objects were made 3 weeks after arriving here
from the Netherlands.
"In the Netherlands I studied at the Teachers Educational College in Rotterdam.
My main subject was Manual Arts and my specialization was ceramics. First,
bowl sculptures and later I made big hollow abstract bird heads. After that
I did the Design Academy in Eindhoven. My passion started when thinking of
applied functional forms. In my work these two schools meet, consciously and
unconsciously."
