NEWS BITS

Coming attractions...Bonaire on TV

March 1-11, Bonaire hosted a TV production crew filming the best of the
island...both topside and underwater for upcoming TV shows on the Travel
Channel and Outdoor Life Network (OLN).  One of the series, "The Diving Today" has already begun to air on OLN (http://www.scubadiving.com/divetoday). Dates for the Travel Channel show are still to be announced.

At the same time, a second TV crew was spotted filming around the island.
What was this second crew doing?  Well the mystery has been solved...we
think!  They turned out to be yet another TV crew from OLN.  Rumor has it
they were filming an episode of Adventure Crusoe.  Adventure Crusoe is an
interactive television series on OLN (log onto www.olntv.com and click on
Adventure Crusoe) that travel to locations around the world and through
discoveries of natural history, including geology, geography, flora and fauna.
It challenges the TV viewers to guess where they are in the world.  Locations
have included Rarotanga, in the Cook Islands, Florida, Costa Rica,
California, Cuba, Arizona, and Gibraltar.  And Bonaire?

Once the different episodes have aired video tapes of the shows will be made available....more on this later.  For anyone that has a satellite dish they can tune it to SatCom C3-C Band, Transponder 8/Digital Channel 91 to pick up OLN.

Hosting this many crews took a great deal of effort and planning.  A big
thank you to all who made these location shoots a success, especially the
hard working team at TCB-Bonaire.

Ten years of sea turtle protection on Bonaire

Friday, March 22 2002 Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) celebrated its ten year anniversary at Doei Diaz. During this special event, presentations were given concerning the beginning of STCB, the past couple of years and a glimpse was revealed towards the future plans of STCB.

After a brief introduction from Imre Esser (current president STCB), Corine Gerharts (former president STCB) had the honor  to start the evening. She had the difficult task to summarize STCB's activities from 1992 till 1998. Quite a task!  She highlighted some of achievements of STCB. The foundation of the organization in 1992 here on Bonaire by Albert de Soet which was a major event in STCB history. She emphasized that one individual can make a difference in this world, with Albert de Soet as an example. She also indicated the achievements of STCB concerning the research and awareness projects that were carried outs by various students in those years. In 1998 Imre was appointed as the new president of STCB and he continued Corine's story by explaining what the organization has been up to the past couple of years. STCB has got major future plans and the last couple of years have been used for preparations and fundraising activities. He then handed over the microphone to Saskia, who revealed what those future plans were about. An intensive research study on land and at sea has been prepared and STCB hopes that the study will start this nesting season. After the presentations a special gift was given to the local newspaper 'Extra' for their outstanding efforts to support STCB by publishing numerous articles concerning sea turtle conservation throughout the years. Acting Governor Ubaldo Anthony congratulated STCB on its anniversary and emphasized the importance of conservation organizations on Bonaire.

After the presentations it was time to dance and party to the local band ' Pali Wiri '. Among the guests was commissioner Pancho Cicilia. Special thanks go out to Lucy and Doei Diaz, Nettech NV and Tjin NV.

LOCAL Report

Bonaire’s Beat

One of the most interesting and lasting impressions visitors have of the island, in addition to its natural beauty, is the music that can be heard at many different venues and on holidays and special events.

The musicians you will see and hear at these interludes are non other the folks that were working during the day as bank tellers, waiters, dive instructors, doctors and perhaps even a lawyer or two.  The fact is that the musical talent of the Bonaireans is well known and greatly enjoyed by visitors and residents alike.

Music has become a special part of the everyday life on the island.  Almost any occasion calls for a DJ or one of the local groups to mark the occasion.  It is not just local music either. International favorites, classical guitarists, string quartets and jazz are all part of the eclectic offerings that can be enjoyed when visiting.

To check out the week's musical menu, all the hotels have an up to date listing of what¹s happening on Bonaire. It is almost a sure bet that many talented musicians have traded in their "day job persona" for an evening's entertainment. Just follow your ears to the source!

On April 07th, the company which represents TCB in South America is celebrated its fifth anniversary. Even though we’re facing difficult times in the market, the Flamingo team maintain its enthusiasm and professionalism in the daily promotion of Bonaire.

Today we proudly say that Bonaire is very familiar to travel agents, the consumer knows each day more about the island, the relationship with the operators is just great and ever better with the dive shops since Yasmin Pérez became a certified diver  and because she understood the importance of speaking the same language of the sector..becoming friends not only in the business relationships but also in our underwater activities.

We believe in Bonaire as an excellent product to market in South America; but also  what we need today, more than ever, is to count on all of your support and cooperation to reach our goals  to “maintain and increase visitors to dushi Bonaire”

Marketing Bonaire to the Operators

As a part of our activities in the market we have started our traditional visits to the directors of the main operators in order to exchange ideas how to increase visitors to the island in crisis times.

Although the difficult times in the region, their interest for Bonaire is very positive. We found that they keep promoting the island as one of the best option in the Caribbean due to its relaxed and peaceful atmosphere and the many adventure activities; and expecting that Bonaire very soon will announce the news about the non-stop flight that the destination needs to open the market.

TCB-EUROPEAN Report

Duikvaker show was busier then ever

The DuikVaker Fair (a special fair for divers) was busier then ever. Many people gathered by our booth for inquiries about Diving on Bonaire. This year we had sponsored the parking tickets, many people showed us the tickets to get a free diving map. In co-operation with Suunto, we organised a competition asking past visitors to send in their most beautiful underwater picture of Bonaire. Next year the best pictures will be awarded with a dive computer, a dive bag or a dive mask.

Duikvak workshop continues

A flyer has been sent to all the members of DuikVak. They can subscribe for the workshop on Bonaire from the 28th of April till the 5th of May. The people, who have attended the pilot workshop  last year were very enthusiastic about Bonaire. The first results have been encouraging, a group of twenty people have visited Bonaire and a group of Lucas Diving (30 doctors) are traveling the 14th of April to Bonaire

Newsletter with campaigns and little secrets

We have printed on an A6 format, a colorful newsletter. It pays attention to the Dive festival, the radio campaign, the Beaumonde competition , the daily flights of KLM starting in June and little secrets of Bonaire. The circulation is to 2500 travel agencies in Holland and to the tour operators in Holland and Belgium. We also translated the newsletter to send it to England and Germany.

Sales calls

We are still visiting all dive schools and shops in the Netherlands. Many  of them appreciate our visits very much. So we are able to establish a strong relationship with the industry. We have also presented the diplomas to the travel agencies this month.

Together with Beau Monde to Bonaire

We are enabling the travel agencies to compete for a great award: “Together on a trip with Beaumonde (a glossy magazine with a circulation of 160.000) and three Dutch television celebrities to Bonaire. An award which was made possible with thanks to Divi Flamingo, KLM and of course Beau monde.

The editorial team of the glossy magazine will traveled to Bonaire in the beginning of April. Theywill produce a 20 pages fashion special in the summer edition 2002 and

of course they will publish  a travel offer to Bonaire. This campaign is co-sponsored in co-operation with KLM and the host hotel for the crew will be Plaza resort. We have already received lots of responses from the travel agencies on this competition.

Radio Commercials, “ no traffic lights on Bonaire”

We have launched a radio campaign in February on all important radio stations.

The most remarkable part of the commercial is the voice that says ‘there are no traffic lights on Bonaire, and the announcer start laughing. People are trying to reproduce the voice. This campaign supports the travel agencies. Consumers are stimulated to book their holiday for Bonaire by a travel agency.

ITB Berlin, the worlds biggest tourism fair

From the 16th till the 20th of March, the ITB in Berlin was held . Ellen attended so that she was able to get in touch with the Ecuador tour operators and other relevant industry contacts. She will also join the DCME meeting.

Residence, another glossy magazine

In the beginning of March, the creative director of the Telegraaf Tijdschriften Groep will travel to Bonaire. He will write an exclusive 4 page article in the Residence, an up market magazine in the Netherlands. In the same edition we will publish together with KLM, Divi Flamingo and Indigo Tours a readers trip to Bonaire. NEWS FROM THE TOURISM SECTOR

New Chef at Buddy Dive Resort and Dock of the Bay Restaurant

Buddy Dive Resort and Dock of the Bay Restaurant are pleased to welcome Chef Casper Prior, as well as the new menu of delights he has created since his arrival.  Casper began his career by attending a cooking and serving school in Denmark. After graduation, he worked at Denmark's "Hotel White House" before heading to the Netherlands, where he was a chef at Amsterdam Ondeugd Restaurant. Casper's favorite cuisine to prepare is Italian (lucky for us!) with his specialty being Filet Valpolicella. With that in mind, this tasty new dishes on the Dock of the Bay menu is definitely the first of many you should try!

Buddy Dive activities expand

Buddy's Activities Center is now offering guided kayak tours to nearby Klein Bonaire, which combine an enjoyable paddle with a guided walk and exploration of the island, or a snorkel along the island shallow terraces.  Buddy Dive is also now offering a night snorkel tour to the famous Town Pier.  No longer is the pier a place for divers only, as the easily navigated pilings serve as a colorful background for many nocturnal inhabitants.

Student culinary exchange program: Bonaire - Italy

The student culinary exchange program is concentrated on developing an exchange of knowledge, information and skills that are needed to further reinforce the educational needs of Bonaire’s SGB Hotel School culinary students. Successful exchange programs have already been customized and conducted for students from Africa, the Dominican Republic, Spain, Brazil and France. The programs “total immersion” design would integrate students into all aspects of hotel management as well as the Italian culture. Students participating in this program will be exclusively selected within the eight top students from the 4th year SGB Hotel School by teachers and school officials based on skill levels, degree of enthusiasm and motivation, aptitude for travel and acceptance of cultural diversity.

Returning students are responsible for conducting a cooking skills workshop for their peers as well preparing written reports summarizing techniques and skills acquired. Currently, Andrea Biondi, coordinator for the AECA, has generously agreed to fund the following: students accommodations, students meals, all teaching costs of Italian educators, all books & written materials, all supplies & consumables used during instruction. However, supplemental funding is still needed to cover several other costs. For more information about this program and about how to be a sponsor please contact Sara Matera at sara@fagro.com

CTO WEBSITE PROMOTING THE CARIBBEAN GETS RECOGNITION FROM LEADING ONLINE TOURISM INDUSTRY MAGAZINE

(BARBADOS, March 28, 2002)….The UK version of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO)’s website promoting the Caribbean, www.caribbean.co.uk, has been recognized by leading online industry magazine, TravelMole (www.travelmole.com).

Caribbean.co.uk was launched on 27 January 2002. Its aim is to provide travel agents and consumers in the United Kingdom with all the latest news and information for travel to the 31 member destinations in the region. “It’s a fresh, vibrant looking site,” stated TravelMole, which recently chose caribbean.co.uk as its Featured Site of the Week. The magazine was impressed with the “excellent quality” of the interactive map, which features click able links to all the named destinations in the Caribbean. It also had high praise for the content. “The information pages are well designed, and have all the facts you’d expect to find – links to weather and climate, country facts, currency converter, brochure ordering, and further links to local tourist board sites,” TravelMole said. “The activities pages are similarly well organized and informative”.

In summary: the travel and tourism magazine described caribbean.co.uk as a “thoroughly enjoyable” and “really good tourist information site” that’s worth taking the time to look around. It’s very well thought out and designed, and makes good use of color and imagery to really capture the feel and communicate it to you. The design is consistently carried throughout the site, and this really helps to build a feeling of trust and confidence,” it said. The web site is multi-lingual with versions available in German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Italian, UK English and US English. A Japanese version is being considered, says Arley Sobers, CTO’s Director of Research and Information Management. CTO’s European office and its UK Chapter contributed to the design and assist with its management.
