You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Bonaire Day Celebration

Bonaire Day, September 06th, is a national holiday which is celebrated island wide. This year the festivities took place in the neighborhood of Antriol and was attended by the commissioner of Tourism, Mr. Ramonsito Booi as well as other on-island government leaders together with  dignitaries from our sister islands in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. The Bonaire Day celebration started off in the morning with an open-air ceremony with local music and a small market place continuing on until late in the evening.

In 1992, it was decided by the island government to bring back the Bonaire Day celebration to the six neighborhoods on Bonaire. The neighborhood of Antriol was the first to host the Bonaire Day celebration; in the last years all the different neighborhoods had the chance to play host. This year it was decided to maintain the same sequence as in the previous years which was as follows: Antriol, Rincon, Nikiboko, Noord Saliña, Playa and Tera Cora. The next Bonaire Day celebration will be held in the oldest neighborhood of Bonaire, Rincon.

During this year’s event,  a documentary on the neighborhood of Antriol was presented to the president of “Sentro di Bario Antriol”. The local reporter/historian Bòi Antoin, in colloboration with others, compiled this documentary.  Other special happening, during this special celebration, were the recognitions given to three Bonaireans: Chico Goeloe, Patun Saragoza and Elvis Martinus,  thanking them for their involvement in sports programs and for being  motivators to Bonairean youth. Elvis Martinus (left), Patun Saragoza (right) and other colleagues are very much involved in promoting the Bonaire Windsurf Kids internationally

Saying goodbye to a colleague

Recently, the staff of  The Tourism Corporation Bonaire  said goodbye to Debby Wauben, our product development coordinator. During the short period that Debby has been at TCB ,she has contributed a great deal to the promotion of Bonaire. She was very actively involved in Bonaire’s cruise matters and Bonaire’s Dive Festival. Besides those huge projects that Debby was dealing with she helped improve Bonaire's EntreNous and several other projects.  The staff of TCB wishes her all the best in her new life.

Experiencing Bonaire and its people

There is nothing more spectacular as staff from the Tourism Corporation Bonaire to read letters of appreciation written by visitors that are truly content with the treatment that they have received during their stay on Bonaire. Therefore we would like to share the story of Marie, Dean and Caylien Bostford, of Maryland USA, with our EntreNous readers.

Just wanted to share with you these details showing the kindness of the people of Bonaire:

This August, my husband, my daughter and I returned to vacation and dive in Bonaire for the fourth time, and chose to stay at the Buddy Dive Resort (BDR) from 1 through 11 August for the first time. We arrived via a slick flight on Air Jamaica--on time and all luggage accounted for--on a fine Wednesday afternoon. During the first 2 1/2 days of our vacation we waived the use of the in-room telephone (hey, we're on vacation here), stood in front of the Bonaire web cam, went grocery shopping, got in several snorkel adventures, a BDR taco buffet, our dive briefing, our 8 year old daughter started in the Sea and Discover program, and 2 dives. We were off to a great start.

Our accommodations were just right and had a picture perfect view of the sea. From the start, we periodically perused the handy BDR information notebook in our room. As in most resorts, you find an information book in your room with information on the various amenities and a bit of background about the place. In the BDR notebook there is a page titled: "So Who Is Buddy Anyway?" This gives a brief history of BDR's humble beginnings and the Rauwers family philosophy and initiative to "create a retreat that truly has a family atmosphere;" it further noted that their daughter and current BDR manager, Debby, was "making sure to carry on that feeling today." The background info closes with a reemphasis on the "family-like atmosphere." I am sure you have read many similar feel-good, self-promotions about a resort--but hold that thought.

On day three of our stay, a Saturday, my husband Dean was not feeling well--noting some pain in his abdomen. Something he ate? He spent Saturday and Sunday unable to eat or do much of anything. By Monday evening he was in emergency surgery at Bonaire's San Francisco Hospital--his appendix had ruptured and abscessed. What a whipsaw to go from the I'm-not-even-going-to-wear-my-watch-Who-knows/cares-what-day-it-is-I'm-on-vactation mindset to a big Now What? Will he be all right? Should he be flown to the hospital in Curacao? Back to the States? The surgeon said no way he could be out the hospital and okay to fly for at least another 7 to 10 days and certainly not by the 11th of August. With already plenty to be concerned about regarding Dean's well being and safe recovery in that hospital (which is the basis of another story in itself), outside of the hospital environment, some of the questions I had to deal with were along the lines of 'Where will my daughter and I stay beyond the 11th? What about airplane tickets? How do I get them changed with no Air Jamaica office on the island?'

First thing Tuesday morning, I went to the BDR front office to explain the situation, to activate the room phone for the multitude of calls I would have to make back to the States, and to see if there was another room and vehicle available for me and my daughter to rent at least through the 18th of August. At most, I was hoping there was another room available for us to extend our stay at BDR; I had already pulled together our things to make a quick move by the end our scheduled stay. What the BDR management and staff did next was unbelievable.

Debby Rauwers and her reservation manger Mirjam Geerdink did nothing short of rally to my aide. Mirjam quickly started arrangements rolling to get our tickets changed to the 18th and to extend my use of the BDR rental truck. She even gave me the use of a cell phone so I could stay in touch with Dean, the hospital, his insurance company, and his personnel service rep without having to stay parked in the room near the telephone. Debby came to our room to visit me and said that not only could my daughter and I stay the extra week in the same room while Dean recovered, but she would not charge us for the extended stay--apologizing that she did not have the authority to waive the room tax as well. Debby and Mirjam also sought out medical professionals! vacationing on the island who might advise and guide us. Debby and Mirjam were literally my lifeline in making sure we had a place to stay, transportation and the cell phone link. Flowers were sent to Dean's hospital room from BDR, and during the ups and frightening downs--and there were a few--of Dean's recovery, Debby visited Dean twice and she and her staff lent me much support and help. I don't know that we could have gotten through this crisis without them. Heleen Bruggeman and her front office team (I so deeply regret that I cannot list them all my name, but THEY ARE ALL ANGELS) helped immeasurably with keeping numerous phone and email messages flowing...I am sure a path was beaten between the front desk and our room. In the end we were not charged for the email exchanges and they cut the phone call costs by 50%. Corinna and Hagen Wegerer of the BDR Dive and Activities operation were also a source of great moral support. They helped make sure our daughter could continue to be involved in the wonderful Sea and Discover program throughout our stay and provided reading materials for Dean's use when he was able. They also gifted us with the last tacked on days of the Sea and Discover program and with a Klein Bonaire snorkel trip for me and our daughter. All the staff members, from the front office, the dive/activity operation, to the restaurant, always asked about Dean and offered words of encouragement, best wishes and/or prayers.

When it hit home that there was no hope to safely return Dean home on our planned 11th August departure date, I worried over those What Next questions and on the day of his surgery I voiced some of those concerns to one of the nurses at the hospital. The nurse asked, "Do you have any family or friends in Bonaire?" My reply was a flat, "No." I didn't know it at the time, but I lied. And so did the BDR information book. It is not just a "feeling" or an "atmosphere" of family at BDR. A flippant claim many make because it is easy to sell in the face of great weather, sparkling blue waters and good times. But at BDR, it is more than a claim: it is REAL--like family they came to the aide of one of their own in a time of crisis.

We look forward to returning to Bonaire and to Buddy Dive Resort next year--we even hope to have the same room (our home away from home). Appropriately, we think, we plan to return in late November because that is where we want to be to celebrate Thanksgiving.

The Pretty Green

The green turtle is part of the history of Bonaire and  STCB. This turtle was the most edible and therefore hunted for long periods, also on Bonaire. The days that green turtles were publicly slaughtered at Lac are over. Illegal catch of these turtles still continues though. When you take a look at the local name for this wonderful creature, "turtuga blanku"" (which means white turtle) it is derived from the fact that the meat is white. The English name (green turtle) is not derived from the fact that the shell is green, but because the soup made from this turtle is green. The Dutch name is even worse: soup turtle. No explanation necessary. When you think about it, it is rather sad that all these names reveal the consumption of this species.

The green turtle is such a beauty. It is the biggest hard-shelled turtle and a vegetarian. It feeds mainly on seagrass and algae. Therefore Lac bay is so important for this species, due to the presence of seagrass beds in this area. You will find the smaller sized turtles but also the bigger ones in Bonairean waters. Green turtles also nest on Bonaire, but very rarely. The track of a nesting green is different from the loggerhead and hawksbill. The last two walk asymmetrically, the green moves both her front flippers at the same time thus creating a symmetrical track. We had our first green turtle nest last year. The baby turtles are bigger and have a very white belly. When these little fellows swim in the water the dark color is barely visible for predators above (e.g. birds) and their white belly blends in very well in the bright water for predators underneath. Clever or not?

Press Visit

Over the past few weeks Bonaire has been visited by travel writers on assignment from a number of high profile publications. A special thanks goes to our tour guide Rolando Marin who provided these writers with the all the best hospitality and information to make their stay and work an enjoyable experience.

Travel Writer: Deborah Williams

From August 28 - September 3, 2001 travel writer Deborah Williams on assignment for AAA Going Places, Western New York Family Magazine and the Asbury Park Press (New Jersey newspaper) was on island.  These three publications target the New York area, which is one of the top markets.

Travel Writer: Paula Rackow

From August 29 - September 5, 2001 Paula Rackow from Bride's magazine
(circulation 500,000) was on island.  Ms. Rackow participated in a number of activities including diving, snorkeling and kayaking in addition to visiting and staying at a variety of resorts.  Targeting one of the most important niche markets, Bride's is one of the top bridal publications in the U.S.

The honeymoon market is an important market for a number of reasons in that it is one of the most stable markets; regardless of the state of the economy people still get married and go on a honeymoon, 40% of engaged couples plan their honeymoon to the Caribbean, the more than 1,728,000 newlyweds (864,000 couples) spend approximately $1.7 billion on their honeymoon to the Caribbean, people get married and take honeymoons throughout the year; therefore the honeymoon market is not seasonal, and honeymooners stay longer (an average of 9.5 days) than the typical family vacation, which lasts an average of 5.6 days.  We look forward to seeing the articles resulting from these two press visits and thank everyone that made both press visits a success!

TCB- EUROPEAN Report

First Mini-Magazine to be Released

The first European Mini Magazine 'Bonaire: Bon Bini!" was released in September. This fall we will publish a Dutch version and an English version. Thanks to all the members of the private sector on Bonaire, editor Michael Gaynor and our colleagues in Kralendijk we managed to put together a magazine with various interesting articles. The Dutch version has a broader scope then the English version, where we focused, as agreed upon in our marketing-strategy, with a stronger emphasis on diving.

Biggest Clipping report Ever

Our June press trip really paid off. Penthouse published a four pages article on diving, but Rien Floris really outnumbered all of the journalists. He managed to get three different articles published on Bonaire (diving, sea turtle, donkey sanctuary) in over 10 different Dutch newspapers. This really gave us the PR-support we need! We sent a news clipping report over to BHG-, Bonhata- and the TCB-office on Bonaire, so please have a look when you pass by.

Direct Marketing To Dive shops

The dive industry is our biggest market and probably will remian so in the future.  Being the largest percentage of the total tourist arrival, we can count the diver as our lifeline. Therefore marketing to this market is necessary for all of us. The 100 specialized dive shops and schools have a huge influence on new tourist. Once certified they ask the shop owner where he/she thinks they should go diving. This is the point were we hope he mentions Bonaire of course! Therefore we started our direct marketing plan to dive shops this summer with the support of Duikvak, the dive-federation. Our latest effort was presenting them our tourist map with all the dive spots. Several hundred have been distributed to divers. During the winter months we'll contact the UK- and German-dive shops in same way: a direct marketing-program supported by advertising in the dive-magazines. One enthusiastic dive shop-owner brings us at least 30 divers a year. We need over 10 travel agents to make the same production!

First Newsletter In Magazine 'DUIKEN'

This month the first newsletter spread was published in the Dutch magazine "DUIKEN". As you all know a joint-marketing initiative by "DUIKEN" and TCB Europe. This brings Bonaire every month  to Dutch-divers. It gives all the members of the private sector a platform to publish their latest information on diving. If you have any news, please send an email and pictures to Rob Keersmaekers: rob.keersmaekers@vipmedia.nl.

Caribbean Village On "Vakantiebeurs" 2002

Both BHG and Bonhata agreed to join our new booth at "Vakantiebeurs" 2002. At least 24 square meters are available to Bonaire at the "Vakatiebeurs" this year. The kick-off will be, as always, a special day for the trade, followed by a couple of consumer days. This Caribbean Village is a co-production of "Vakantiebeurs" and CTO Holland in order to attract more visitors to our booth. We look forward to a productive few days!

Nomination Golden Flamingo Starts Next Month

Within a couple of weeks, TCB Europe will present the nominations for the first Golden Flamingo Award, presented to a Dutch travel agent. This prestigious award is  people's choice award. All major hotels and resorts on Bonaire have entry forms on their desk. Please do not forget to deliver them to TCB's office in Kralendijk. They'll send them to TCB Europe.

Update Tour Operators

We also checked our list of tour operators in all the European countries and added where possible new ones, removed old tour operators and made hyperlink to their own websites. Mostly directly to their 'Bonaire-page'. Jake and Linda are watching the web visits on www.infobonaire.com very closely, so we can evaluate if and how these efforts pay off.

Tour Operators Feedback: Pay More Attention To Education!

September 3rd the first annual meeting with our largest Dutch tour operators took place. What can we do? How can we help you? "Focus on trade-education"  was the message we got. "Please realize the average travel agents has no knowledge at all on Bonaire," they told us. They were pleased to hear our new staff member Nuria St. Jago visited already over 75 travel agents in her first weeks on the job. Nuria informs the travel agents on Bonaire's latest, next to of course the Bonaire-basics. Nuria will continue doing her visits during the next months.
