Bonaire's first official Wedding on the Beach

On Friday July 27, 2001, the first official wedding on the beach took place at Sorobon Beach.

Bonaire has made a change in its wedding regulations, making it possible to get married outside of Passagrahan (city hall). Although this beautiful colonial building remains a favorite traditional venue for weddings, many couples wish to have a more pastoral setting for exchanging vows.

Choice of location must have advanced government approval. Visit our website for more information on Getting Married or honeymoons on Bonaire. www.infobonaire.com

The Eagle takes the Bonaire Flag to new heights

"A promise is a promise" were Mr. Jacques Vachon's, president of American Eagle, first words after the plane landed on Bonaire on Saturday 28 July, carrying the Bonaire Flag painted on the aircraft.

This is a moment in history for Bonaire. For the very first time an aircraft, in this case the American Eagle, carries the Bonaire Flag. As you may know on June 2nd, 2001 American Eagle started service from their hub in Puerto Rico, making connections to Bonaire from the US now even easier. American Eagle flies to Bonaire on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and will add a Friday flight to the schedule on September 7, 2001.

TCB-NYC Report

On July 26, 2001 a half hour show on Bonaire was on the Travel Channel.  In 1997 TCB and Adams Unlimited worked with a crew from Exotic Islands, a travel show that airs on the Travel Channel in the U.S.  Hosted by model Hunter Reno (niece of former Attorney General Janet Reno) the half hour program showcases one island around the world per show giving viewers an in-depth look into that destination.  Since the half hour episode devoted to Bonaire first aired in early 1998 the show has been repeated at least one time during the 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 seasons.  Most recently the episode of Exotic Islands on Bonaire aired on the Travel Channel on Thursday July 26th at noon.  You can catch Exotic Islands on the Travel Channel Monday through Friday at noon and on Sundays at 1:00 p.m. and again at 1:30 p.m.

Editorial Placements

Over the past few months feature articles on Bonaire have been in a number of key North American publications.  In August alone two feature articles were in Skin Diver and Sport Diver, two of the top dive magazines ... and this is just the tip of the iceberg!  Read on ...

Skin Diver (circulation 227,014)

In the August 2001 issue of Skin Diver, writer Ty Sawyer penned a 6-page feature article on Bonaire, entitled “Moonlighting in Bonaire.”  Describing the night dives at Bonaire’s Town Pier, “that could’ve made us permanently nocturnal bubble blowers,” the article describes the fascinating world of night diving, stating that “it’s a bit unnerving to have a five-foot Tarpon suddenly appear, inches from your face, from the 2:00 a.m. darkness.”

In addition to night diving, the article describes the daytime attractions of the island, the Dutch-inspired architecture, the old slave huts and the “famous and photogenic Willemstoren Lighthouse.”  Of the 10 four-color photos included in the article, six are of the underwater nightlife.  Accompanying the article is a section called Skin Diver Guide Bonaire which includes details on getting to Bonaire, island facts & tips and names of dive operators and resorts. TCB’s 800 number is also included.  In addition a world map is shown indicating Bonaire’s location as well as a close-up of the island, highlighting points of interests, such as Washington-Slagbaai National Park.

Sport Diver (circulation 115,000)

The August 2001 issue of Sport Diver, features a cover story titled “Maxing out: Bonaire’s Ultimate Dive Day.”  The story, written by the magazine's editor, Pierce Hoover, describes his day of diving in Bonaire, which calls for about a half-dozen "submersions."  Stating that “the good news was that Bonaire is the one island in the Caribbean where such a dive profile is not only possible, it is actually fairly common,” Mr. Hoover goes on to mention his explorations to the “coral-rich slopes” on the southern side of Klein Bonaire, detailing that the “health of the coral reefs are no accident”, but are due to Bonaire establishing an “island-wide marine park, outlawing spear fishing, and educating divers.”

Accompanying the article are 4 four-color photos, as well as a photo of Bonaire’s coral reefs in the table of contents of the magazine.  A Travel Planner section at the end of the article includes information on island resorts and dive operators (telephone numbers, e-mail and website addresses are included).

Rodale’s Scuba Diving (circulation 185,000)

Accompanying a recent issue of Rodale’s Scuba Diving magazine was the 2001 supplement for travel agents selling scuba diving and snorkeling vacations.  Featuring an article on the ease to dive in and around Bonaire, the guide states that divers visiting Bonaire can dive a variety of ways including shore and boat diving at reefs which are very accessible from shore.  Also pointed out is the ease of snorkeling, the ideal weather conditions and optimal average water temperature.  Further highlighted are Washington-Slagbaai National Park, cliff walls at Boca Onima, the island’s varied bird species, and mountain biking.

Included in the article are a number of pertinent Bonaire travel facts, including what entry documents are necessary to enter Bonaire and TCB’s 800 number and website address.

Porthole (circulation 65,000)

The June 2001 issue of the bi-monthly magazine, Porthole, features a three-page article on Bonaire, entitled “Basking in Bonaire.”  Stating that “Bonaire is to divers and snorkelers what Everest is to mountain climbers,” the article in addition to mentioning the history and climate of the island, indicates Bonaire’s role in “protecting its ecosystem,” and providing dive information and educational programs to its visitors.  Describing this as the number one reason for the island having “created a large number of superb dive sites,” the article showcases these sites by including 4 four-color photos of the island, one of which was in the magazine's table of contents.

Also mentioned in the article are the flamingos at Goto Meer, windsurfing which is “fast becoming known” due to Bonaire’s ideal conditions, as well as various recreational activities including visiting Boca Onima’s limestone caves, and mountain biking.  TCB’s 800 number and website address are included in the article.

American WindSurfer (circulation 200,000)

The March/April 2001 issue of American WindSurfer features an article titled “Fresh Air Bonaire.”  The article focuses on the 24 kids from Bonaire that competed at the 16th Annual Midwinter’s Windsurfing event in Florida (the event was aired on CNN News and “received major international attention”).  Stating that “suddenly windsurfing and the island of Bonaire have a new level of prominence,” the article goes on to mention the new flights from Puerto Rico on American Airlines.

The article chronicles the evolution of windsurfing in Bonaire, which began when Elvis “Piskechi” Martinus, discovered windsurfing through his kids who “adapted to the sport remarkably well.”  Following this he and his partner, Patun Saragoza, “managed to teach and maintain a flock of over seventy kids” from Bonaire.

Accompanying the editorial are  a two page spread with four-color photos depicting the kids from Bonaire windsurfing and enjoying the water. The article also mentions, that American Windsurfer magazine has initiated a summer windsurfing camp on Bonaire, and has included the dates and telephone numbers to call for more information.

Tropical Fish (circulation 62,000)

The July 2001 issue of Tropical Fish has an extensive 12-page article titled “Bonaire The Tropical Fish Capital of the Caribbean”.  Belkis Kamback, the author who visited Bonaire in September 2000 with her photographer/husband on a one-on-one press visit, writes of Bonaire’s “350 species of colorful tropical fish and over 120 types of coral”, and describes the island’s roots of different cultures, creating a mix of heritages and languages.

Stating that the “water around Bonaire and Klein Bonaire” and the “Diver’s Paradise” license plates, emphasize the “efforts Bonaireans have taken to preserve the underwater world by establishing one of the first marine parks in the Caribbean," the article goes on to mention other places of interest on the island, such as the Willemstoren Lighthouse, the flamingo sanctuary and Goto Meer.

There are 12 four-color photos displayed in the article.  The pictures range from the orange cup coral to the ancient petroglyphs and sea life.  Complementing the article is a four-color photo of a flamingo with a caption on Bonaire in the table of contents. In conclusion the authors state that “Bonaire was the best island choice we could have made.

New York Times (circulation 1,691,287)

The May 13, 2001 travel section of the New York Times featured a listing of the Bonaire Dive Festival in the International Date Book section.  This weekly section details a selection of key international events, giving a brief description of the event’s activities.  The Dive Festival listing included information on the purpose of the Festival - that it is geared towards divers and snorkelers who are concerned about the state of the world’s coral reefs - and included TCB’s toll free number for those who want more information.

This placement also appeared in the New York Times National Edition, circulation 340,061.

Caribbean Travel & Life (circulation 115,000)

In the July 2001 issue of Caribbean Travel & Life, Associate Editor Jessica Chapman gives an overview of her picks for the top 20 snorkel sites around the Caribbean (this was the cover article), including Bonaire and its shore snorkeling options as one of the top spots.  The one-page section devoted to Bonaire, titled “Have car, will snorkel,” details Ms. Chapman’s experiences shore snorkeling at Pink Beach, Alice in Wonderland, and Invisibles among  moray eels, parrotfish, trumpet fish. Ms. Chapman visited Bonaire in March 2000.  In addition, Bonaire’s Town Pier was also included in the article as one of the best night snorkeling sites in the Caribbean.

El Vocero (circulation 250,006)

The April 28, 2001 travel section of El Vocero featured an extensive article on Bonaire titled “Un paraiso para los amantes del mar.” The article was written by Raisa Rivas who participated in the April 20 – 22 American Eagle FAM trip and included 10 four-color photos of Bonaire.  Giving a grand overview of the diversity of activities and the history of the island, the article included mentions of “si rica es la fauna marina,” hotels - “Harbour Village, una de las hospederias mas exclusives de la isla,” and in a section called “Que hacer en Bonaire,” detailed information on diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, mountain biking and the island’s many sites including “la cantidad de flamingos.”

The April 28th travel section of El Vocero also featured, under the title “AMERICAN EAGLE inicia ruta a Bonaire,” an article on American Eagle’s new service to Bonaire.

Primera Hora (circulation 70,000)
The May 3, 2001 travel section of Primera Hora featured writer Juan Soto Melendez’s article “Bonaire La capital del buceo y el windsurfing.”  The article, which is also the result of the April 20 – 22 American Eagle FAM trip to Bonaire, in which Mr. Melendez participated, featured information on Bonaire’s many eco-adventure activities and hotels.  With five four-color photos including one of Plaza Resort Bonaire and Harbour Village Beach Resort, the article profiled Bonaire and detailed American Eagle’s new service to Bonaire.

A number of hotels including Buddy Dive Resort, Captain Don’s Habitat, Divi Flamingo Beach Resort, Harbour Village Beach Resort, Lions Dive Hotel, Plaza Resort Bonaire and Sand Dollar Condominium Resort were mentioned in the article, along with a sidebar including detailed information on “Moneda and documentos necessaries” and Bonaire’s website address.

Work hard and your dreams will come true: The stories of Tonky Frans, Ro Mayer and Sky Solbach

The two following articles are written by Ann Phelan, PR person for Cape Cod Windsurfing Association. Ann Covered "The Bonaire Kids" at the Gorge Games that took place in  July in Portland Oregon.
Here are two interesting stories about wishes that do come true...

When one looks into the stars at night and makes a wish

When one looks into the stars at night and makes a wish, it is hoped that the wish will come true. For a few young men living on a small Caribbean island, wishes do come true. The hopes and dreams of a windsurfer have become a reality for two local sailors from little Bonaire. Their dreams led them to one of the biggest international windsurfing events in the US and the world.

Everon “Tonky” Frans and Ronald “Ro” Mayer have spent at least the last five years sailing the pristine waters surrounding Lac Bay. They have been able to sail with the best and latest gear and have been coached by dedicated people such as Elvis Martinus. Their friends and families have allowed them the time to spend hours on end doing what matters the most, windsurf.

Young sailors who truly love the sport also have heroes, the men and woman in windsurfing that reign at the top. Robbie Nash, Josh Stone and Bjorn Dunkerbeck come to mind as a few who make lots of money sailing all around the world. They are the best and brightest windsurfers. Huge companies because of their visibility also sponsor them. Sponsorship can entail several features. It might mean they design their own gear and sails. It might mean they are paid to represent that company. It also means when they win or are photographed, they are paid. Being sponsored is a dream come true. Not only do you get free gear but also you are paid to do something you love.

Can you imagine the feeling of two Bonairean sailors when they learned that one of the biggest board manufacturers, AHD, has offered to sponsor them? Wait, it doesn’t stop here. Fiberspar, a boom and mast company based out of Wareham, MA has also offered to sponsor the guys. The man largely responsible for this is Cape Cod’s own Nevin Sayre. Nevin, the great grandson of a US President and former world windsurf champion is employed by Vision Performance, the company that handles AHD and Fiberspar. After meeting the sailors in Bonaire and then at Midwinter’s he saw great potential. Nevin being hugely instrumental for the Bonaire team to come to Cape Cod’s King of the Cape realized his insight was right on. They scored two of the top five pro spots at this international event. Once the guys reached The Gorge he notified them of their sponsorship.

When I asked Ro and Tonky how they felt, they said they almost cried with the good news. Sponsorship by two of the largest windsurfing companies is almost unheard of at this level. When Tonky and Ro arrived at the Gorge they had a few sails and each a harness. Initially they were borrowing gear. It was Bob _____ from Windwing who met the guys and offered to lend them gear. When he saw them rip on the waters of the cold Columbia River, he was shocked. “Who knew they were that good” he told me one night. He lent them gear and then the next page in this windsurf fairy tale begins.

Bill Hansen owns Windwing Sails out of The Gorge. Bill offered Tonky and Ro sponsorship with the best and newest sails the company offers. Now, they had a sail sponsor to go along with their boards and booms. It was truly amazing. One day Tonky and I were talking and he mentioned he wanted to make a few design changes in his sails. The next thing I knew he met with Bob, made a few sketches and notes. Tonky may be off designing his own prototypes soon. Last but not least Tonky was able to secure one more sponsor, the biggest gear and gadget distributor in windsurfing, Da Kine. Da Kine makes harnesses, booties, lines, up hauls and all the knick-knacks windsurfer’s need. It cannot get better than this.

When I hooked up with the guys there was little wind so we played. We ate out, did movies, ate local berries, and sat around playing basketball or talking wind or Bonaire. Mostly Bonaire. They both share such intimate stories of the waters, sites and sounds of the island. We sat one night looking at a map of Bonaire and they told us stories about the sites and sounds. Their eyes reflect their love of this windy paradise. Their words reflect their need to return. Meanwhile there is work to be done.

The wind came up a few days before I left and I hardly saw them both. Tonky took off to train with a really good local pro. Ro set off to train as well. Their drive and ambitions are clear. Their goals are set. They want to have fun and to sail well. There is no aggression here, just pure love for the sport. It is all in their hearts and is engrained in their spirit.

I am keeping abreast of their efforts through another amazing Bonaire/Gorge sailor, Sky Solbach. Sky is already pre-seeded meaning he has competed in the Gorge Games and is very instrumental in helping his peers get to the launches and sail well. He offers tips and sound advice. The camaraderie continues. My other Gorge based friends send me emails of news on the guys. Unfortunately I have lost touch with them this week but fear I should not intrude on this tedious time of training and momentum. After all, they are emerging athletes and I will be reading and hearing about them in days, months and years to come. And we can all say, I know them.

So, we can all look up to the stars and dream for this fairy tale has become real for two young men who believed and reached high. Look up into the sky tonight and make a wish and think of them. After all they are part of you and the little island of Bonaire.

Sky Solbach

Some folks are just plain lucky. And some folks work hard to get where they are. This is the case for windsurfer, Sky Solbach, NB111. Not only has Sky had the opportunity to live and sail in one of the sunniest and windiest Caribbean Islands he also spends the other half of the year at The Gorge, another windsurf hot spot. Life cannot get better than that.

I met Sky at King of the Cape. One first notices his gorgeous blonde curlls. Sorry, Sky but they are to die for. Sky possesses a humble and pleasant personality as well. This along with the fact that he can sail! At King of the Cape, Sky worked the crowds despite the higher winds he prefers. He is at ease with sailing and has such a calm presence.  This attitude has obviously gotten him far but do not be fooled. He has passion and his story reveals this to be true.

I caught up with Sky at The Gorge where he was spending his summer working and playing. Sky is proud of the fact that he works for a living and everything is not given to him on a silver platter. I still think he is pretty darn lucky having a Dad like Mike Solbach who moved the clan to Bonaire when Sky was nine. He and his gregarious brother, Josh spent their formative years being educated in Dutch, Papiemento and the wind. In fact, Sky started sailing even before many of the other Bonaire sailing team members did. He and Mike and Josh loved the thrill of the waves and Kai or racing on the Leeward side. It wasn’t until he discovered freestyle did he really enjoy the calm of Lac Bay. Sky loves extreme and loves it hard.

I had been spending quite a bit of time with his friend’s Tonky and Ro as they trained for the games  but later talking to Sky I learned this was his second Gorge Games. He is a seasoned athlete having raced a lot with his whole family in Bonaire and Aruba.  Every year he would compete in The Aruba Hi-Winds.  His brother Josh and my dad Mike are the only two people to ever win all three disciplines: Slalom, Course and Long distance.  Sky describes himself as pretty laid back but listen to this, he placed 4th in juniors and placed first three years in a row at the Bonaire Wave Challenge. Not too shabby for laid back.  This is the quiet man who has steam and fire in him when it comes to sailing.

Sky spent quite a bit of time telling me all about the Gorge Games. He and Tonky and Ro are competing against some really fine local and national talent. The conditions are very unfamiliar to Tonky and Ro but Sky knows the river and loves the thrill. Saturday if the famous 17-mile down winder race from Stevenson to Event Site. Sky told me about his last attempt. He arrived at the launch as the starting signal commenced. By the time he got to Viento he was first. It was nuclear winds and gear that was too large that kept him from placing. This is a grueling race not for the weak in mind and body.

On July 4th I called Sky to see if he wanted to sail. His Dad said he was off to the Oregon Coast, another scary place to sail. Picture rip tides, logo high waves, sharks and 45-degree water. Sky loves this. Waves and the extreme drive this young man for sure.

Sky has far to go. He loves his dual life living in Bonaire and the Gorge. He also wants to continue to compete and travel. Sky has been very supportive of Ro and Tonky who are very far away from home. He looks forward to the Games and then time to work again. It is a healthy balance for a very balanced windsurfer.

Sky is sponsored by Windwing Sails , DaKine, Chinook, Nolimitz, and  Naish Boards. Check out the Subaru Gorge Games web site at: www.gorgegames.com

The sea turtles of Bonaire: the leatherback

Leatherbacks are one of the most amazing creatures in the world. They are not only impressive because of their size (they can grow to a length of 2 meters); they are also known for their outstanding migrating capabilities. They travel enormous distances both horizontally and vertically. For example, leatherbacks tagged in Surinam were found  all over the globe. They swam to Texas, the West Coast of the States and they even crossed the Atlantic to be found back at the East Coast of Africa. Leatherbacks can easily travel up to 10.000 km. in a year. Another amazing feature of these reptiles is their capability to dive very deep. They are known to venture down to about 200 m, but once a leatherback was documented diving to a depth of 1300 m. Why do they dive all the way down there?

If you imagine yourself as a leatherback, you can easily make a connection between its swimming behavior and its features. One very specific characteristic for example is the size of the front flippers. You definitely need some large paddles to be able to cross the Atlantic! The leatherback is also very capable of regulating their body temperature. Their size and thick insulation are among the characteristics that allow them to be active in water temperatures between 0 and 15 degrees Celsius. Another distinctive feature is the fact that the leatherback is the only sea turtle with a soft, leathery shell. So, if this guy dives very deep, the pressure won’t crush his shell. From all this one can only conclude one thing: the leatherback turtle is an extraordinary well adapted sea turtle.

Unfortunately, we don’t see that many leatherbacks around Bonaire. They used to nest on here, but the last nesting attempt dates from 1988. No nesting attempts have been reported since then. They do seem to pass by in our waters very occasionally. It would be a feather in the cap of the STCB if we find leatherback crawls again on the beaches of Bonaire.e the knowledge, you are not able to create suitable management plans and pass on that knowledge to others. And that is the second part of the STCB project: raising awareness, especially amongst the local community.

15th position for Elton “Tati” Frans in the World Sailing Championship in France

Last month Bonaire’s own windsurfing champion, Elton “Tati” Frans represented the Netherlands Antilles in the ‘Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2001’ in France, where he competed against 29 other countries. Although Tati started off with the positions 25 and 27 during the first two days, he improved drastically moving up and ending on the 15th position.

The Dutch windsurfer Joeri van Dijk won the gold medal, followed by Greece on the second place and Hong Kong on the third. Other countries who have made it in the top 10 are, Germany, New Zeeland, Israel, Polland, Argentina, France and England. “The winds where very strong” were Joeri’s first words. Nevertheless he managed to concur the first position and will now start preparations for the Olympics 2004.

The Bonaire Sailing Federation is very proud of Tati and satisfied with his achievements.  They anticipated the race to be extremely difficult, due to the conditions in  Europe. Tati’s coach Vladimir Plavsic confirms what many already know “ Tati has the strength and talents of a medalist”. Tati congratulations, you've done a great job!!!
