NATURE'S CORNER

BY JERRY C. LIGON

So,  You Want to be a Naturalist--Whatever profession we find ourselves pursuing, most of us manipulate our lives just enough to get into the out of doors, at least infrequently.  A few of us are out there full time in the natural world and as we go through our lives "peeping and botanizing", we accumulate knowledge like a detective, and we store these bits of knowledge and facts so that we are more familiar with the mysteries that surround us, and perhaps, somewhere, someone will ask a question pertaining to some of this accumulate knowledge and they will be appreciative with our interpretations.

But there are some downsides to calling ones self a naturalist.  For one thing, you learn to endure the falsities that you pick out of your favorite movies on television, like "Roots", where a night scene in the deep south is made more eerie by the call of an incessant owl.  Naturalists that are proficient in birds and know their calls, recognize the owl as a Boreal Owl which is only found in the extreme northern sections of our country.  Obviously it is a recorded call that the producers thought "neat sounding" for the desired effect on  us. Producers of movies have proven to be sleepy fellows when it comes to authenticity of nature and hoi polloi enjoy their entertainment without regrets.  Another example of obvious nature fakers is hearing the wild call of a Red-tailed Hawk every time any bird of prey is seen soaring over beautiful landscape, whether it be Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon,  or Andean Condor, or even the silent Turkey Vulture, the sound is always the same.  One car manufacturer even uses the wild scream of the Red-tail Hawk as its most trusted auditory symbol, but this time, it is an authentic Red-tail that announces the "wildness" personified in the car.  Naturalists tend to be loaners, or at least a bit on the silent side,  lest we bother others with our uncovered discrepancies.

But there is more.  If you are calling yourself a naturalist and someone from Europe is listening, especially if they are Dutch, they are sizing you up with a long, hard look because they know that you are one who runs around with no clothes on.  Where this idea comes from, I do not know.  They have taken a perfectly accurate word from the English and applied their own definition.  Perhaps they confuse "nudist" with "naturalist" or even "naturist" with "naturalist". Do they think that "nudist" is a vulgar synonym that one never use, and "naturalist" is acceptable? Whatever the reason, these words that begin with "n" or not that confusing to keep straight, and I wish people could remember the differences.  No telling how many Dutch or Europeans I have disappointed on my field trips with the naturalist.  Charles Darwin never had this problem.

NEWS BITS

The 'Hello Tourist' Project six years in the school system.

The Hello Tourist Program is an educational tourism awareness program adapted to Bonaire and presented in Dutch and Papiamentu making it unique for the island.

This school year the Hello Tourist project was honored by BONHATA. The earnings of the BONHATA gala dinner were earmarked to reissue the Hello Tourist Booklets. The project was reviewed by the different partners and decided that the focus should be shifted from being a tourist during the activities to taking part in the work process.

A half-day training session was introduced as a standard activity for the sixth grade classes. The classes went to different hotels were they were split in-groups of 4 students.   Each group was accompanied by a supervisor of the hotel and visited the different work locations. The students sanded fans, helped cleaning the gardens, cleaned windows, set tables etc. After 40 minutes the groups rotated and visited a different department. The students enjoyed the experience and the teachers thought the process very educational for their future career of the students.

The month of June is tourism month for all the sixth graders in the elementary schools on Bonaire. The Hello Tourist project consists of two parts: classroom lectures from booklets in Papiamentu/Dutch, Tourist outings and work experience.

During June the following was offered to the 6th grade students:

  • A sailing charter for all students
  • A bus trip for all students
  • Kayaking for a number of groups
  • Mountain biking
  • Fishing trips
  • Windsurfing
  • Half/Full day hotel training
  • Guided snorkeling trip
  • Snorkel trips
  • Restaurant training

Without the terrific cooperation of the teachers, the project could not have gone so well. Lots of the outings took place in the afternoons and the teachers had to give up their free time. Many thanks to all of them, administrative assistants, principals and school boards.

The cooperation of the Tourism Sector was fantastic as usual.  Without a doubt, the industry stands behind the 'Hello Tourist' project and sees it as an investment in the future.

We would like to thank the following for being part of the program:

Bus Tours: Baranka Tours, Tropical Tours, and Bonaire Tours.

Overnight stay & breakfast: Captain Dons Habitat/Rum Runners,

Hotel Training: Buddy Dive Resort/ Dock of the Bay, Lions Dive, Captain Dons Habitat, and Harbour Village

Sailing trips: Samur, Seawitch, Woodwinds, Pirate Cruises

TCB-NYC REPORT

October 2000 Road Show

The culmination of the four-month launch program to support Air Jamaica's second flight from Montego Bay to Bonaire (which is scheduled to begin October 4, 2000) TCB-New York is organizing a Bonaire Road show in Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, the New York City area and Baltimore.  Taking place October 10 -18, 2000 right after Scuba Exta Sea Expo in Denver, the Road show will consist of sales calls (both with and without Air Jamaica), attending CTO travel agent seminars and trade shows and will allow all hoteliers to showcase Bonaire and their hotel to travel agents in some of Bonaire's top markets.  The four-month program incorporates a number of marketing disciplines including trade shows/seminars, direct marketing, internet marketing, sales, public relations and culminates with this Road show and Scuba ExtaSea Expo in Denver

Air Jamaica's second flight

The second Air Jamaica flight to Bonaire is now being widely promoted and will be a great boost to Bonaire's airlift problems.  The additinal flight is on Wednesdays and will allow visitors the option of extending their vacations or be able to arrange mid-week departures.

Scuba ExtaSea Expo, October 6-8, 2000

There are still two prizes available for those exhibitors who want to supply the land portion of the prizes being awarded at the Bonaire Sponsored events during the show, they are: 1st and 2nd Prize in the Photo Contest.

Bonaire's dinner presentations, CTO chapters

The messages of the special Rediscover Bonaire packages being offered, Bonaire's new piers and Air Jamaica's new flight were reinforced at the CTO chapters in Washington, DC and Baltimore. These seminars took place on July 18 and 19 with over 50 agents attending the Washington, DC seminar and over 100 at the Baltimore seminar.  Bonaire, which was represented by TCB-New York, was very well received at both shows with agents expressing a great deal of interest in the Island.  A sales representative from Air Jamaica was also present at the Baltimore show to talk about Air Jamaica's service to Bonaire.  In addition to showing the new Bonaire video and having a question and answer session, information on the island was distributed.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

 - The July 2nd, 2000 travel sections of the Cincinnati Enquirer (circulation 328, 432) and Hackensack Record (circulation 201,402) featured a syndicated column from Arthur Frommer.  This column, which is syndicated by King Features Syndicate, focused on islands that are considered “hurricane proof.” Bonaire was included along with Aruba, Curacao, Margarita, Panama and Tobago as islands that fit the bill.  The section on Bonaire includes information on the island stating that it's "popular with divers and bird-watchers."  Also included in the section on Bonaire is information on a package to the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort offered by Caradonna Caribbean Tours.  Calling it “newly renovated” and “back as one of the island’s premier resorts,” Mr. Frommer goes on to say that that hotel is an “especially good choice for divers.”

- To date this column has been featured in over 10 newspapers around the U.S. including the New York Daily News Metro Edition (circulation 820,230), New York Daily News Queens Edition (circulation 326,322), San Francisco Examiner (circulation 570,752), Rocky Mountain News (circulation 552,085), and Daytona Beach News Journal (circulation 120,739).

 - Bonaire and special Rediscover Bonaire packages offered by Sand Dollar Condominium Resort and Dive Inn as part of this program, were recently included in the July 16, 2000 Metro (circulation 820,230) and Queens Editions (circulation 326,322) of the New York Daily News.  Included in the "Going Places" column the placement-included information on Bonaire's Rediscover Bonaire program and packages inclusions for the Sand Dollar and Dive Inn packages.  Toll-free numbers were given for each hotel.

  2001 Hotel Co-op Ad Schedule

We have begun to work on the hotel co-op advertising schedule for 2001, with requests for proposals going out to publications last week.  As we build the schedule for next year we are closely evaluating the proposals and the "value-added" programs proposed by each of the magazines.  To maintain our pre-eminence in the dive market and support our growing "dive plus" activities we are considering publications from the following niche markets: Dive, Nature & Outdoor, Travel Trade and General Leisure.

The first draft of the hotel co-op advertising schedule for 2001 is expected to be available for comments by August 14.

Duiken Magazine:

The saving plan in the “Duiken magazine” is still being promoted every month.
Maduro Travel has prepared a special package using this program, which
corresponds to the announcements receive by mail from the August issue.
Duiken promotes this program together with an excellent written editorial on diving in Bonaire. John Neuschwander has recently visited the island and acquired an up to date overview on the island and ample information on diving in  Bonaire.

Martinair Mobiel:

The ABC Martinair Mobiel Promotion took place on Saturday June 17 in
Amstelveen in cooperation with Travel Agency Le Pas.  The program is sponsored along with our sister islands of Aruba & Curacao. Other sponsors are the Dutch Tour Operators Indigo Tours and Special Traffic. An ABC contest was conducted during this day. Flyers were given out, which described the contest. Participants had to answer two questions per island and delivered the form in a special basket in the Airmobile.  The lucky winner was given a trip to
Bonaire and will stay at Captain Don's Habitat. Pictures were taken by the local press and several nice articles were written about the Air Mobile Promotion.

A Dutch actor was married on Bonaire:

The famous Dutch actor Peter Faber was married in Bonaire. He has mentioned this in the newspaper "De Telegraaf”. In the article was also mentioned that his favorite vacation destination in the world has always been Bonaire for quite some years. For this reason he wanted his wedding on Bonaire. In general Bonaire has become a very popular destination for Dutch TV personalities and celebrities.

CTO Holland meeting:

The Bonaire tourism office in Holland has attended a meeting where all Caribbean destination representatives in the Netherlands and Tour Operators featuring Caribbean destinations were present. The objective of this meeting was to establish a Dutch 'chapter' of the CTO taking into consideration the increase in Caribbean awareness in the Netherlands. The main venue to be used for this will be the construction of a Dutch website for the Caribbean. Membership and sponsorship is possible for Tour Operators and Tourist Offices. They are also considering affiliate members. The next meeting will be on August 13, 2000.

NEWS FROM THE TOURISM SECTOR

September 1-3, 2000 Bikers Tour

Mr. Orlando Fransisca and some friends joined forces, in 1999, to bring a group of bikers from Curacao and Aruba to Bonaire to be part of the first Bikers Tour on the island. This tour has turned to be such a success that it triggered the group of friends to establish the first Bikers Club on Bonaire. This Club was recently founded and named Bonaire Bikers MC. Currently, Mr. Orlando Fransisca is the president, "Palo Djo" Evertsz, vice president; Nataly Davelaar, secretary; Martijn Rijkes, Treasurer and "Mocky" Arends as Board Member.

The Bonaire Bikers MC has jump-started this year with the 2nd Bonaire Bikers Tour on 1, 2, 3 of September. The growth in the number of participants is due to the successful Bikers Tours in 1999. Registrations from Aruba and Curacao are on the rise for this year's Tour.

The program and route planning have been done in advance and can be viewed below. To give this event the final touch, Flamingo T.V will be filming the Tour from a helicopter.

The Bonaire Bikers Tour 2000 couldn't have been possible without the sponsorship of Balashi, Banco di Caribe, Tourism Corporation Bonaire, Bonaire Warehouse, Taxabon, Motorcycle Shop, OHERT, MCB, Lisa Gas Station and Eden Beach Resort.
