LOCAL REPORT |
|
BY JERRY C. LIGON It is a typical June that has arrived on Bonaire. Incessant dryness, perhaps in some years as long as 3 1/2 months of unrelenting aridity, since the last showers of the rainy season. But then "the small rains"arrives and we have a few days of pre-dawn showers that result in a few puddles that dry up by noon. But something quite different happens out in the "mondi". A resplendent blossoming takes place within 3 days of the mornings of rain. It is the kibrahacha tree, which has been unnoticed all year. This morning, as I looked out on Kralendijk's horizon that takes in Seru Largo I can see great patches of intense yellow up near the rim of the escarpment. One cannot delay going out and taking this show in because the flowers remain on the tree only for about 3 days and then they are shed. What makes this floral display so spectacular is that there is no other color that dilutes the intensity of the yellow because the tree only has the energy and moisture to either produce all flowers or all leaves--never both at the same time. After the flowers drop off, the leaves will develop and the fruit from the pollinated flowers will began to grow into elongated round pods. The yellow of the flowers attracts many types of bees and wasps and, as usual, the ubiquitous little "sugar thief", the Bananaquit, which seems to be mocking the intensity of the flower's yellow with his own bright yellow underparts. After the fruit ripens, Yellow-shoulderd Parrots and Caribbean Parakeets will flock to these trees and consume the seeds from the elongated, cylindrical pods. The
tee is a member of a tropical plant family called the Bignoniacea
family. Its
scientific name is Tabebuia
billbergii, but locally is known as kibrahacha, a rather
quaint sounding name referring to the wood's hardness.
Translated from papimentu, kibrahacha means "break
your hatchet". The
name has been taken by a local group of folkloric dancers and they
reflect, in motions and costume colors in a quite similar way, the
colorful tree in flower. Another similar tree is called the West Indies or pink cedar tree which often grown as a large shade tree in local yards and differs from the kibrahacha in that it blooms for a longer period of time in the dry spring season, when the tree has leaves and does not need to be awakened by early morning showers for it to burst into flower. I have noticed that the local birds love to peel open the pods of this common tree and eat the seeds, especially birds like the Bare-eyed Pigeon (know locally as ala blanka- whitewing). One often sees flocks of these rather large, gray pigeons sitting in groups on telephone lines that put them in close proximity to the fruiting pink cedar trees BY WILLIAM ANTHONY About this artist William Anthony was born on Bonaire Netherlands Antilles. He'd traveled through Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Rep. Dominicana and recides now in Amsterdam where he has regular performances. Also so once in the while he apears in some t.v. commecials or photographies. He walked on next different actors, like Sir John Gielgud, and actresses. His latest album is Music from Bonaire containing mostly traditional songs of the Netherlands Antilles. Music
from Bonaire: This is the title of the latest single CD produced by Mr. William Anthony. The following is a brief description of some of his CD. You can also listen to it by going to http://www.mp3.com/WilliamAnthony The
idea was to make a recording of some old songs that can be
considered as traditional and included when I decided to
produce another CD of my own. There are a couple of
reasons why I choose for this genre and not one including
popular kind of music. First, I wanted to do something
that was distinctive. Second, it had to be recognized by
the folks for whom it was intended. In
1993 I start searching for songs with which I could
project a part of the culture of Bonaire. I must say it
was a very involved job. With the help of Bonaireans such
as Hugo Gerharts. After some conversations with some
people here in Holland and also in the Netherlands
Antilles, I made a selection of a couple of songs for my
CD. People in Curacao, in Holland and even a friar
Snijderslied have send these songs to me. This
song, Snijderslied, and another one on the CD, ‘Schoon
is the West’, brings back sweet memories by many people
on Bonaire. A period in their youth, the education they
had in school and how the teachers did everything to teach
them to sing these songs. All
this is for many years ago when Bonaire was a different
place. In the year 1954 the islands of the Netherlands
Antilles gained autonomy. That event inspired some people
to start preparing for the big celebration festival.
Around the year 1952, Boeis Haile wrote the song
‘Bonaire’. Dedicated to the inhabitants of the island.
In his written permission to me to use the song, he wishes
that one day this would be world famous. In 1983, I
represented Bonaire during the International song festival
in Juan, Puerto Rico and performed songs from Bonaire as
well as other Caribbean and Latin American counties. So you see the story behind ‘Music from Bonaire’ has many episodes. I hope this year to have my book published. In this publication (Dutch) I will make a summery of all my artistic scores beginning from 1975 and also some of the sweet music on Bonaire since the year 1850. For
now I can tell you enjoy my music on-line. http://www.mp3.com/WilliamAnthony

This
past week, June 10 - 17, 2000 Bonaire celebrated the
Fourth Annual Bonaire Dive Festival. Eight travel writers
from publications ranging from the Richmond Times-Dispatch,
For the Bride, Recommend and Pathfinders to Travel World
News, Wallpaper, Times of the Island and Windy City Sports were on
hand to cover the week-long festivities. In addition to
participating in the Dive Festival, the writers spent much of
their time exploring the island above and below the water by
mountain biking, diving, snorkeling, kayaking and windsurfing and
dining out at many of the island's restaurants. One of our most
successful press trips to date, the writers were most impressed with
the island and the tourism industry's commitment to protect the
environment, the diversity of activities offered and the
friendliness and hospitality of the Bonairean people. We can
surely expect some great publicity in the coming months as a result of
this press trip. A special thanks to our host hotel, Harbour
Village Beach Resort and all of our tourism partners who
helped to make this press trip a great success.
This
past weekend, Bonaire helped New York celebrate the Caribbean with the
event Islands In The Park. The celebration, which took place on
Friday June 16th and Sunday June 18th, was attended by representatives
from TCB-New York along with tourist boards from many other
Caribbean islands. Sponsored by Air Jamaica, the Second
Annual Islands in the Park festival took place in Brooklyn, NY at
Prospect Park and was a success by all accounts.
Over 10,000 people came out to enjoy the day's activities which
included the opportunity to sample local food and dance to Caribbean
music. The event was
featured live on NBC on Sunday morning with Bonaire receiving 5 on-air
mentions ... including one mention of the Dive Festival.
On Friday June 16th, a trade show for travel agents was also
held at the Brooklyn Marriott Hotel. The event drew over
300 travel agents who were on hand to collect information and
listen to music presented by Air Jamaica. An 8 day/7 night trip
donated by Captain
Don’s Habitat with air from Air Jamaica was given away.

FREE PUBLICITY FOR BONAIRE IN A NEW PEPSI COMMERCIAL Last
week the new commercial for Pepsi Cola was launched in which the island
of Bonaire was mentioned. The
content of the commercial is about a boy riding a mountain bike through
the ocean. After biking for
a while he comes out on a beach, where he asked a couple….”Excuse
me, is this Bonaire” We
are very pleased because Pepsi Cola uses subjects for its advertising of
a very high international ranking. We think Bonaire has its meaning
unhurried...unspoiled…unforgettable and definitively perfectly
pure, brought out in this well done commercial ad. TCB
will have the original copy of the ad , as a courtesy from
the publicity agency and also the schedule in which it can be seen in
the Venevision channel.
South
America Press Trip… Bonaire June 17/20 Journalists
from top newspapers in Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina visited Bonaire
this past weekend following a program we designed in Caracas. The host
Hotel was Habitat. From
Venezuela: El Nacional, El Universal, El Carabobeño (Valencia), El
Panorama (Maracaibo), Travesia sin Limite (extreme sports), Gaceta Aerea
(manual for the travel agents) Official visit of Burney el Hage, director of marketing, in Venezuela Burney
el Hage was in Caracas last week with a very busy agenda, visiting
the most important Tour Operators and also Mr. Ludwig
Lourens, general manager of ALM. Burney also visited with many
divers from Venezuela. The
key points of the meetings were the behavior of the Venezuelan market
and the difficulty with the airline connections. Burney was amazed that
in spite of the recession in which the country is immersed, the tour
operators were very optimistic about the programs for Bonaire. As has
been demonstrated by the sales of Carnival and Easter Week. Julio
Arnaldes from Arts & travel said that the crisis only pushes us to
work harder and take advantage of the new technology to reach the
customer. Bonaire is keeping all the momentum going in its advertising
campaign in the Venezuelan market. Recently, El Nacional dedicated an entire page from it Sunday Tourism Supplement to the Dive Festival in Bonaire. They reaffirm Bonaire is the best diving destination and only a short hop from Venezuela |
