LOCAL REPORT |

BY JERRY C. LIGON During
the Rincon Day celebrations, I got an early start by following the
runners on their 17 km race from the stadium in Kralendijk to
Rincon. Afterward, I
decided to visit a few of my favorite nature sites in the area.
Following the paved road to Washington/Slagbai Park, I
stopped and birded the large,
fresh water pond and found that most of the waterfowl and
shorebirds were nesting. I
found young, floating along with the adults of Pied-billed Grebe,
Caribbean Coot, and the incessant alarm calls of Black-necked
Stilts indicated nesting along the shoreline. Continuing
interior along the kunuku roads, I stopped to examine a termite
mound along side the road that had the potential of being
Caribbean Parakeet nest site.
As I examined the termitary, a large almost moth-like bird
flew feebly up from under my feet, and landed rather heavily
10 feet away and looked
injured. It
walked across the road almost dragging a wing and disappeared in
the cactus and shrubbery. It
was a female White-tailed Nightjar.
I spent a few minutes trying to relocate her, and then
remembered why birds appear to be injured when they are disturbed.
They are on their nests and attempt to lead unsuspecting
predators off on a goose-chase.
Sure enough, by back-tracking to where she had first flown
up, I spotted 2 pinkish-brown eggs lying on the ground.
The ceremony of nest building was almost absent as there
were no sticks, or grass stems or even feathers for the eggs to
lay on. I hid behind
a mesquite bush thirty
feet away and within 10 minutes she was seen walking along the
ground approaching the eggs, and begin to incubate them once
again. Such a
remarkable bird, and more remarkable to find such a secretive
species on its nest. Local
Bonaireans call this bird "palabrua", meaning
"witch bird" because of the huge red glow that reflects
from their eyes at night when a car headlight reveals them sitting
or flying from the less traveled roads after dark.
I have taken interested birders to a place where they are
assured of seeing them and their eerie eye shine at night and
everyone is delighted to add this species to their life lists.
This bird's name harkens back to former times when many
mysterious things, especially those that seemed to be most
comfortably active on the darkest of nights, conjured up to local
people visions of evil spirits out roaming the countryside.
Anyone who has seen them flying back and forth catching
moths and other nocturnal, flying insects and catch that red gleam
from their eyes can easily see how such stories could get started.
White-tailed Nightjars belong to a family of birds called
Goatsuckers, and with their huge mouths were once suspected of
stealing milk from livestock, except that their huge, gaping
mouths that have conspicuous "whiskers" on the outside,
are to capture their prey with, the flying, nocturnal insects. Another
rare species of bird here on Bonaire, that we have not documented
nesting yet, is the Barn Owl.
During the nesting season it can make the most hideous
screams and shrill cries that can only be heard in the dead of
night, and they too are known as "parabrua" by
Bonaireans. People
have reported seeing then sitting in
darkened cave entrances here on the island, and I have
examined photographs of a Barn Owl, taken by Marcel Nahr, so they
are more common than we suspect, but again very secretive, and to
actually see one, staring back at you will definitely make you
think you are looking into the face a ghost or evil spirit.
Prof Voous lists in his Birds
of the Netherlands Antilles, published in 1983, that the only
authentic record of a Barn Owl was a single feather found in a
cave at Spelonk in 1951, so up until many recent sightings, they
appear to have been much rarer fifty years ago.
I found a pellet of a Barn Owl with tiny mammal bones
imbedded in the
indigestible matter that is actually bolted up out of the throat.
The tiny bones were bats, upon which the owl had been
feeding because they eat almost entirely mammals that they capture
at night, and the bats we have here may be the only mammals we
have that have been Desirée Neuman
Desirée Neuman has been working at TCB since January
1993. Her parents, both born in Bonaire, lived in Aruba for
over 30 years.
In 1986 Desirée left Aruba and established
herself in Sint Maarten, where she lived for 6 years. Her
parents around that same time returned to their native island.
In 1992 Desirée decided to leave Sint Maarten
and join her parents in Bonaire.
At TCB she worked for the first three years as
a receptionist and information officer. After that she was
promoted to office manager and also acts as a secretary to the
Director of Tourism.
Her job is to make sure everything runs
smoothly at the office, which is not so easy at such a busy place
as TCB. Nevertheless, she enjoys her job very much and is
always very amiable and helpful.
Desirée lives with her son of 10 and daughter of
four. She spends her free time with her children, her parents
of her friends.
On
April 30, 2000, Bonaire celebrated the 12th
anniversary of Dia di Rincon. This day started with a mass
followed by activities on the main streets of Rincon.
During
the celebration, several local bands provided music from
the past, especially the harvest time. The local food couldn’t
be left out there were plenty of choices. Not only had the
visitors the possibility to try out our local fare, but also
buying souvenirs, snacks and much more. The activity
that attracted most attention on this special day was when
“Grupo Kanta Orkidia” who presented the way of life of
Rincon in the early years. At
the end of the day, most revelers at the “Dia di
Rincon” were dancing cheerfully behind the caravans, which
were playing local music. For all those Bonaireans who have participated in the “Dia di Rincon” this special day is getting better and better. A special thanks goes to FUDEKO and all other individuals, which had made it all possible

Commencing
in May, TCB-New York will launch an all out communications campaign
using email, fax broadcast and direct mail to reach over 30,000 trade
and consumers with a “Visit Bonaire” message. Negotiated as
an “added value” part of our advertising and on-line promotions,
and in addition to the normal “reader response” leads, we will
receive qualified leads of consumers and travel agents who have
expressed an interest in Bonaire as a destination.
In
addition to our normal trade show schedule of DEMA in January, The
Adventure Travel Show in February and Beneath the Sea in March, the
New York office spent high season in “high gear” expanding the
market segments we target with the Bonaire message.
January Bonaire
was named as the “Destination of the Month” on the TravelFile
website in January. As the featured destination for
January. a contest was hosted by Bonaire with the grand prize
being a trip to Captain Don's Habitat and Bonaire (this contest was
posted on the website during the entire month of January). People
could enter the contest on the TravelFile website as well as on AOL
and CTO's websites (these websites were also places where people could order
a Caribbean Vacation Planner online). The catch was that in
order to enter the contest, consumers had to first order a CVP.
This contest gave Bonaire exposure on all three websites (TravelFile,
AOL and CTO) for the entire month of January (AOL alone has over 18.7
million paid subscribers and under the TravelFile section of AOL, over
250,000 screens are viewed daily).
The greatest benefit from participating in this contest is that Bonaire received information - names, addresses, emails, etc.- for all of the people (close to 7,000 names) who ordered the CVP in January. In addition Bonaire and Captain Don's Habitat received a page on the TravelFile website containing information on the resort and destination with a link to Bonaire's website. As with any names in the TCB database, any hotelier can request the names for their own use in order to do mailings, fax drops, broadcast emails, etc. February Bonaire
presented a CTO dinner seminar in Atlanta, GA. March
Bonaire
presented a CTO dinner seminars in Detroit, MI and New York City. April Bonaire attended a CTO trade show in New Jersey and spent a week in the Orange County, CA area for the Air Jamaica Southern California Road Shows.

activities (cycling, kayaking, windsurfing) offered and information
on the Dive Festival. This article is a result of the November
1999 Dive Festival Press Trip to Bonaire for which the article's
author, Stephanie Boozer participated. An avid diver Ms.
Boozer participated in most of the Dive Festival activities as well
as other eco-adventure activities while she was on island. Two
four color photos (one on the website's home page) accompany the
article which can be viewed on the website for the next few months.
Tropi-ties.com is a website dedicated to providing information for
people looking to take a trip to a tropical destination. -
The April 4, 2000 travel section of the New
York Post (circulation 419,372) featured an article on
Bonaire and the Dive Festival. Written by Brenda Fine who
participated in the November 1999 Dive Festival Press Trip, the
article focused on the Dive Festival, diving in Bonaire and the
island's efforts to protect coral reefs. Information on above
water activities like touring Washington-Slagbaai National Park is
included as well, along with dates of the Fourth Annual Dive
Festival, Bonaire's website address and TCB's (800) number. -
The May 2000 issue of Caribbean
Travel & Life (circulation 142,324) carried a
feature article on diving in Bonaire. A half page four-color
photo accompanied the full page article which focused on the ease of
diving and snorkeling in Bonaire. The article cited Bonaire as
an island that "goes out of its way to make things easy for
divers and snorkelers." Mentions of Bonaire's
longstanding commitment to protecting marine environments are also
included. The article was written by the magazine's editor Bob
Morris. -
The April 17, 2000 issue of Travel
Agent (circulation 53,500) featured a Caribbean
& Bahamas special section with the main article focused on
eco-tourism. Islands, like Bonaire, that make eco-tourism an
integral part of their tourism product and offer eco-tourism options
were included in the article. The section on Bonaire featured
information on the Bonaire Marine Park becoming a National Park and
eco-adventure activities available in Washington-Slagbaai National
Park. This was the second article on Bonaire to be featured in
Travel Agent magazine in one month's time (the other article being
from the March 20, 2000 issue).

BITS
On
April 30 we attended the Oranje braderie in Boxtel with the Martinair
Airmobiel. The promotion went very well, the weather cooperated and there
were many people at this braderie. We gave out approximately 1500
flyers on which a contest was printed. People needed to answer 2 questions per island and needed to deliver this form in a special basket in the Airmobiel. At this promotion people could win a week vacation on Aruba. This promotion was together with Special Traffic and Indigo Tours. The second prize was a bag with all kinds of goodies and gifts from the various partners. In 2 weeks we will inform the prize winnars and invite them to the travel agency. We will make a photo and send this to the press. Our band played the whole afternoon and attracted many people. Inside the Airmobiel we gave out information brochures of the three islands and the brochures of Special Traffic and Indigo Tours in a Dutch Caribbean bag. We were all dressed in Dutch Caribbean shirts and had a promotion team of 2 ladies dressed the same, giving out the contest forms.
At
the end of the day all parties involved were very satisfied with the
whole day and the number of people that visited us. The next
Martinair ABC promotion will be in June.

Mr.Nico Visser, environment manager from TUI, aware of the fact if a destination is environmentally friendly then they are a desirable place to visit for like minded tourists. In this article he mentioned that Bonaire is doing well and is a great destination with clean water and unspoiled nature. A great lift for Bonaire, especially with a slogan and a beautiful underwater picture at the front page: Bonaire snapt't! (Bonaire knows what they are going).
Presently,
there is a project called "Milieu bewuste toeristen Antillen" where
by Bonaire & Curacao are participating. The target is to make
sure that tourism and preservation of nature go well
together. In the
