NEWS FROM THE TOURISM SECTOR

TCB Bonaire | Local Report

Ms. Ronella Tjin Asjoe-CroesFrom the Director's Desk

To all our tourism partners

Everywhere you go today, the buzz word is “change”. Bonaire has also jumped on this bandwagon over the last 5 or 6 years undergoing lots of changes, especially in the tourism arena. These changes have seen us realizing one of our best years for arrivals and also an increase by 15 times in cruise ship passengers, much to the delight to our downtown merchants! Our commitment to all the new social media for marketing has also been a boom to letting folks in on why we are consistently chosen by readers of dive and travel publications as top rated! Along with change comes challenge. My time at TCB has been a wonderful experience that has allowed me to hone management skills in the tourism sector. Now the time has arrived for me to move on in my career. I have accepted the position as Director of Tourism for our sister island of Aruba. Yes, it is a “change” for me, Aruba and Bonaire! I also wish to think of it as “change with progress”.

The current economy notwithstanding, we remain a unique destination that remains unaffected by the pressures that the leisure markets generally suffer. As an adventure destination we attract visitors who make adjustments in their spending patterns and still come in lean times as well good ones. When I started my tenure here at TCB we were fortunate to be in a position of being an attractive vacation choice with great potential. With the help of our local and overseas partners, we were able to initiate programs that proved to yield positive results even in the face of recession. I am proud to have been a part of the initiatives that were began and will continue on after I have left for Aruba! I am proud at all that has been accomplished and the cooperation and teamwork that allowed us to move forward even when we had to agree to disagree!

I am confident that my successor will also someone who can embrace the changes that open opportunities and the new leader of Bonaire’s tourism industry will be someone whose love for this island, its people and its tourism product is as strong as mine. I also want to thank Bonaire for having given me the honor to lead and manage Bonaire’s tourism industry for 6 years. It has been a thrill. Bonaire and each of you have made me who I am today, ready for another challenge and further self-development. In this light there are many people to thank, but I guess the people that have worked with me on a day to day basis and that have been kind enough to cope with my way off meeting demands to get the job done., deserve a huge thank you – TCB personnel, overseas offices. The Board of Directors, various Commissioners, private sector partners, NGOs, and public sectors partners who have done the same and have instilled confidence in me… thank you. Bonaire has given me dear friends, great moments, great memories, wisdom, a deeper respect for and better understanding of people’s culture and the importance of our natural resources and last but not least my loving husband, Elvis! My ties with Bonaire will remain forever… I am leaving a strong tourism office behind, with numerous and great projects for 2011 and beyond! Yes there will be challenges, but I am sure that Bonaire – both public and private – will face them the best way possible. In this respect, unity, synergy and synchronization will help! I hope that we will see more and more of this throughout the coming years. I am happy with what I am leaving behind and I am happy that I can also devote time to my native island of Aruba and hopefully have a positive and meaningful impact on the island’s tourism industry. Bonaire and Aruba have always been dear friends and have always worked together in a positive way. This should be continued, and please know that you have a friend in Aruba, and at the new reorganized and privatized Aruba Tourism Authority.
