TCB Bonaire | Local Report

Ms. Ronella Tjin Asjoe-CroesFrom the Director's Desk

Looking forward to another year of close cooperation with you
and our partners all over the world!

As the year draws to a close it is a time for TCB to reflect on its accomplishments as well as the challenges we’ve encountered and still need to meet.  Our year has seen the implementation of programs, such as the Tourism Awareness Program, the Annual Bonaire Dive Into Summer, the “Smaak van Bonaire”, the Lifetime Achievement Award … just to name a few.  We continue to work to improve our airlift and to promote Bonaire as one of the best destinations to visit.  Our efforts to upgrade the official website are nearing completion, and as per January 2010 Bonaire will feature a more user-friendly www.tourismbonaire.com, with a revamped look as well.

We also will be saying good-bye to Rose-Anne Rollan and Roosje Van der Hoek-Goeloe. They have been an important part of TCB and will be missed.  A heartfelt “thank you” and we wish you tremendous success in your future.  TCB will be introducing its new addition(s) to the team soon, and has taken the opportunity to re-organize its organizational structure a little bit, so as to be able to continue guiding the island’s tourism industry with a professional and dedicated team of people.

One of the most important jobs of our office is to keep track and report on the arrival statistics.   Our figures are used by a number of sectors to plan and devise business strategies.  We are happy to have been able to see improvements in our efforts to provide our stakeholders with this valuable resource through, among other, improved and more extensive statistical reports. It is a continuous challenge though to stay ahead of all statistical arrivals, but we will continue to focus heavily on this matter in 2010.

We are very much aware of the challenges the state of the world economy has placed on our island.  Bonaire has been certainly challenged this year, and we have without a doubt felt this within our tourism sector and in other sectors of our economy. Our trend of continued growth has been affected by the economic recession since last year September. Our Year to date July statistics show an overall decrease in stay-over tourism of 14%, even though the month of July shows an increase of 6% compared to July 2008 (our first increase in 10 months of downturn). The North America market continues to feel challenges on the area of airlift, next to the recession, and shows an overall decrease of 22%, whereas the other markets are improving and show decreases that are lower than previous months; Europe -4%, South America -3%, Caribbean -19%. Most recent statistics (post July informal statistics) do reflect what the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) have been cautiously forecasting, which is a light start of recovery. However, this has to be treated with much caution, as the road to recovery will likely be a long one, even taking a year probably according to the afore-mentioned organizations. Furthermore, as the travel industry still finds itself dealing with recovery from the economic crisis, consumers will remain cautious in their spending habits and this is what we have seen so far. Based on informal input from on-island stakeholders, we are aware that for instance, visitors might be opting to stay at small accommodations as opposed to full fledge resorts, taking into account their spending habits. This is a matter that has to be taken into account, as even though numbers (tourism arrivals development) might reflect positive signs this might not necessarily mean that the entire industry is back to normal and problems have all disappeared. Cruise Tourism Numbers for this season show a projected increase of 9% and the season will end June 2010. Despite of the increase, we do project that visitors’ spending through Cruise Tourism will be lower than previous years, in line with impacts of the recession and spending habits stemming from the crisis. So far, feedback indicates that cruise visitors are taking tours, but might be spending less on other matters, such as merchandize.

On a positive note, so far there has been no major unemployment due to the crisis, furthermore the overall investor’s confidence in the island has been pretty resilient, even though it might be affected by uncertainties surrounding Bonaire’s constitutional status within the Dutch Kingdom right now. The island has taken the time to develop its integral Master Plan, as well as an integral Physical and Zoning Plan, which is in the make. The public and private tourism sectors have both been proactive in their marketing and advertising programs. The private sector has provided visitors with added value packages and we are currently discussing great marketing possibilities for 2010. We will continue to keep up our airlift efforts and will work hard to implement additional exciting projects in 2010; “Marketing, Promotion and more Marketing and Promotion and the introduction of our “Sustainable Bonaire” project, which will include the continuation of our successful Tourism Awareness Program “Smile, Boneiru ta Dushi”, under the new slogan “Mama Smile Goes Green”.

As the New Year approaches, TCB remains optimistic and continues to see the positive signs in both the US and European economies, and continues to believe that Bonaire will get back on the wagon of incredible results we have seen before commencement of the recession. We believe that it is a good moment to take the time and plan our tourism development accordingly, in line with our vision of a sustainable development for our island.

Our local office and overseas offices have proved to be valuable in guiding our marketing plans and implementing all of the tasks that resort under our office. We look forward to another year of close cooperation between our offices as well as our private sector partners all over the world!

A blessed Christmas and New Year, filled with joy, health and happiness!

VENEZUELA

Business Venezuela
As result of the recent press fam on island last October, this magazine from Venamcham in its anniversary edition dedicated a five full colour pages to the island of Bonaire with the titled  BONAIRE “A window to Caribbean Ecotourism” written by William Römer.

The journalist mentions that Bonaire is known as one of the finest places in the world for snorkeling and scuba diving, particularly for shore diving near the underwater cliffs by the coast. The Bonaire government has also played a significant role in the preservation of nature, not only of underwater life but throughout the island. From an ecotourism standpoint, Bonaire is definitely an island that offers much more than the best diving and snorkeling in the world, since there are many activities to be discovered in this spectacular island, such as windsurf, kitesurfing , hiking, trekking, kayaking and mountain biking.

In a gracious way “pure pedaling”, the writer describes the different trails for several levels existing in Bonaire for bikers, ranging from beginners to advanced, mostly in the northern section of the island, managed by Miguel Brito from Bonaire Wellness.  The Washington Slagbaai National Park, well managed by Fernando Sinal, truly spectacular for those passionate about mountain biking.  For the practice of windsurf or kite surf there is JIBECITY managed by DJ, a spot located on the southeast of the island offering the necessary infrastructure for these sport activities.   In accommodation Bonaire offers excellent facilities such as Captain Don’s Habitat, Buddy Dive Resort, Eden Beach and Bonaire Oceanfront Apartments, among many others. Enjoy the report in attach.

Ocean Drive
A high class magazine in Venezuela in its Anniversary edition highlighted Bonaire with two beautiful color picture report. This is another of the magazines that came to Bonaire on press fam.

There are countless activities that can be made in this paradisiacal island thanks to the excellent weather conditions found here all the year.  Highly recommended: diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, kite surfing, kayaking, land sailing among others.  According to experts, the favorite places for those who practice scuba diving the beaches are: Pink Beach, Angel City, Salt City and Calabas Reef, while for those who do snorkeling, the great  sites are: Funchi Beach, Boca Slagbaai, Nukove and nearby Klein Bonaire.

For those who love to explore the island, there are interesting alternatives such as: field trips to Washington Slagbaai National Park, a walk to the beautiful Willemstoren lighthouse, the trails in bike enjoying the scenery or horseback riding in Kunuku Warahama.   And for those more adventurous, the excursions to rappelling and rock climbing in Brandaris, the highest point on Bonaire.

In accommodation, there are many options tailored to each visitor.  Following some recommended:  Captain Dons Habitat, a fabulous hotel offering the perfect balance between luxurious accommodations in contact with nature.   Bonaire Ocean Front, offers beautiful ocean view apartments and is located next to the quiet area near to downtown, Kralendijk.  Eden Beach Resort, with the best accommodations for visitors.  Buddy Dive Resort, one of the most complete hotels in the island makes it unique.  Kontiki Beach with beautiful apartments, perfectly framed in a wonderful landscape.  La Pura Vista, an small luxury property is one of the best kept secrets in the island.
The journalist Mónica Carrillo, highlights the excellent gastronomy existing on island and she could not end the report without mentioning the activities of biking with Miguel Brito from Wellness connection and windsurfing at Jibe City with DJ.    They were all excellent hosts!   In attach more in detail the Ocean Drive article.
