TCB Bonaire | Local Report

From the Director's Desk

Ms. Ronella CroesCOPING WITH GLOBAL ECONOMIC DOWNTURN

December is a month that Bonaire is gearing up for high season and putting finishing touches on next year's programs and reflecting back on the previous year. The big "news" of course for 2008/9 is the Economy. With the world's attention focused on the negative, we think it is important to share with you our thoughts with regards to the economic challenges and its impact on Bonaire's tourism.

We are pretty lucky to be able to report many positives. This month will see the return of the direct, non-stop flight from JFK to our island!

As for TCB's actions to keep tabs on the markets, we have been conducting surveys to monitor the situation. Here's a synopsis of our findings from our main markets.

US MARKET

Several quick surveys have been conducted in this market.
(1) October 2nd (pre DEMA) - mixed reviews from hotels on occupancy numbers for high season and after.
(2) November 4th (post DEMA) - mixed reviews, while some properties did better than last year, others did see a slowdown

In general we have consulted our main partners and for the most part they remain positive about results / trend for Bonaire for high season 2008 and for 2009! Some are even seeing an increase in overall bookings for Bonaire, as compared to this year. In this respect it is important to emphasize that this is the general trend for Bonaire, some properties' results are in line with this trend while others aren't.

We have been watching our load factors closely and these are looking strong for the US market. Our new JFK flight requires extra attention and TCB has been conducting additional promotion through an additional stimulus investment to increase awareness of this new service to Bonaire! Our airline partners have put new, lower pricing in the marketplace to attract visitors over the winter period, so the combination of additional capacity and lower fares should serve to support arrivals numbers.

The initial forecast of a growth between 4-6% for the US market in 2009, will be adapted in the first quarter of 2009, so as to be able to capture results of first months of 2009.

EUROPEAN MARKET - PRIMARY MARKET; THE NETHERLANDS

The last survey among our key partners indicates that they still do not see big shifts in advance bookings as compared to this year. Some partners even show a slight increase in advance bookings and others show a slight decrease. Requests for quotes do get cancelled on a more frequent basis, due to charges that are added to the total quote (airport tax / KLM etc.).
However, airlines have already revised additional charges (e.g. fuel charges) and thus this will alleviate this aspect. The latest trend indicates that there's an increase in last-minute bookings
as compared to advance bookings.

At this moment we have still not adjusted our forecast for 2009, which is set on a growth between 5-10%. Our office will adjust this in the first quarter of 2009, so as to be able to capture results for the first months of 2009.

Besides the economic situation, one has to take into account that Arke Fly did not introduce their second flight in October, as originally planned, due to current uncertainties; this will also impact our initial forecast.

The last survey conducted on November 17th illustrates that specialized Tour Operators / Travel agencies are - on a comparative basis - coping better with the economic uncertainties than bigger / all-in Tour Operators. Based on this we forecast that Bonaire will be better off as compared to other destinations reliant on leisure and general segments.

Nevertheless, our European market will be affected overall due to the economic downturn, decreasing value of the euro and decreasing trend of long haul trips.

YEAR TO DATE RESULTS IN TOURISM ARRIVALS

Arrivals up to September this year indicate that Bonaire's tourism has continued to grow after a record growth in 2007. YTD arrivals indicate a 4.64% growth up to and including September.

Bonaire has seen a growth in tourism, except for the months of July and September. The latter showing a decrease of 11% as compared to September 2007.

YTD results indicate that all markets have grown. The North American market shows a growth of 5.14% compared to 2007, with a total of 26,538 arrivals from this continent. This is 1.71% for the European market, with a total of 22,813 arrivals. 9.71% for the South American market, with a total of 3,367 arrivals and 27.78% for the Caribbean market, with a total of 3,477 arrivals.

The Dutch market does show an increase of 4.33% compared to 2007, while the US market an increase of 3.97%. Nevertheless North America maintains its leading market share of 47%, while Europe's market share decreases by 1.16%.

Please note that our half Year Statistical Report 2008 is in the completion stage. We will send an announcement when this is finalized.

2008 PROJECTION IN TOURISM ARRIVALS

Initial projections indicate a decrease in tourism arrivals in October, a slight increase in November as well as December. We do forecast that Bonaire will close of this year with an overall growth in tourism between 2 and 3% compared to 2007! Overall one can see that the months of September and October have hurt our growth trend, however we do forecast that Bonaire will still leverage from the positive months and close this year with a growth, albeit lower than initially projected.

GENERAL

Focusing on a particular niche in the market is proving to be in Bonaire's benefit! On a comparative basis, while we will be impacted by the economic downturn, this should be less than other destinations.

TCB's main focus during these tough times will be to consolidate our markets, meaning retaining our tourism arrivals base and making sure that we are strong here. Additional growth is of course welcome, but during these tough times we are following a consolidation strategy.

In order to do this, we have adapted our strategy so as to increase Bonaire's presence in the markets and better cope with these times of uncertainty;
- Extra promotion in the North East area of the US, so as to boost Bonaire and support the new JFK flight.
- Introduction of online promotion in the US market - Scuba Diving Magazine, Sport Diver and Caribbean Travel and Life.
- Additional boost in the Dutch and potentially secondary markets - in the makes, but will focus on increasing PR efforts and Business to Business presence.

Based on past experience, Bonaire has always been able to weather downturns due to its unique position in the market as well as the loyal visitors who keep on returning year after year. We thank our visitors!

A WORD OF THANKS AND MY BEST WISHES

I would like to thank you also for your continued support throughout the years.

I wish you a Happy Holiday Season and a great 2009 as we meet new challenges with optimism and a positive outlook!

Antor Meeting very successful >

Last month Anne-Martin Uildriks from TCB Europe visited the Antor Press workshop. Antor is the “Association of National Tourist Office Representatives”. Every year the association invites all tourism corporations for a press workshop. During these workshops journalists and representatives of the tourism corporations meet and talk about the latest developments. Of course Bonaire had its own table. At this press meeting we managed to have a lot of useful conversation with several journalists. It was nice to talk to so many enthusiastic media partners. As TCB Europe is putting even more effort in organizing press trips of interesting media to Bonaire in 2009, it was great to see a lot of enthusiastic journalists visiting our table. The press toolkit we’ve made is now in the right hands.

< Bonaire Panoramika a great success!

The first week of Bonaire Panoramika turned out to be very successful! More than 8.000 players enjoyed the game. Many prizes have been won, but the trip to Bonaire is still in the game. So we expect a lot more players these coming weeks. The game again was one of the main items in the Dutch Bonaire newsletter which we’ve send out this month. We are very pleased that a lot of our partners are participating in the new Panoramika game (by donating prizes for the winners). They found the initiative very interesting and are looking forward to new kinds of marketing tools from TCB in the future.

New edition of E-newsletter in Dutch and English

Last week we sent the latest Bonaire e-letter for the Dutch market. The newsletter contained a lot of different subjects. Off course the game Bonaire Panoramika was one of them. Who doesn’t want to win a trip for two to Bonaire?  Another subject was the article that showed up in the Dutch newsletter The Parool lately. This article encouraged the readers to go to Bonaire for a holiday this winter. Why wait in Holland for a white Christmas and be disappointed again? Just go to Bonaire: sunshine and cool trade winds guaranteed. Further more the e-zine was full of interesting articles about bird spotting, diving lessons and off course the anniversary of Sinterklaas. The Dutch Santa will visit Bonaire again December 5. Next week the new ENG E-zine will be send out.

CTO get together >

Last week the annual C.T.O. Chapter Holland get-together took place in Amsterdam.  It is a good time and a good place for some small talk with all partners and the people of the CTO. The get together turned out to be very valuable. CTO informed us about their plans for beginning of 2009. CTO also send out their e-newsletter last month with the main issue: Beaches. We found a way to include Bonaire in the e-newsletter by sending the input to CTO concerning Klein Bonaire and the sea-turtle conservation project.

Editorial Highlights

The New York Times (1,100,000)
Bonaire was featured three times very prominently in the November 9th edition of The New York Times. Entitled “Winter In the Sun,” The New York Times entire travel section was dedicated to the Caribbean. The first article, “39 Reasons To Go To The Caribbean This Year,” journalist Austin Considine, highlights 39 reasons for vacationers to seek some solace in the sand and surf of the Caribbean this winter. Coral Paradise Resort is featured as reason number 26 to visit the Caribbean. Even though Coral Reef Paradise doesn’t fit the “big-resort” profile, the hotel is praised for its excellent service, offering 24-hour shore-dive access, daily boat dives and next-door proximity to the popular Captain Don’s Habitat diving center. A link to their website, rates and telephone number are also included in the write-up. This story is available at http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/11/09/travel/09carib.html?ref=travel.

The second article in The New York Times, entitled “Fewer Flights May Mean Higher Fares,” focuses on the fact that getting to the Caribbean this winter may be a little harder and a lot more expensive, as many airlines have cut back on flights. Due to this situation, carriers are looking to take advantage of major carrier cutbacks again, and have secured a number of new routes to the Caribbean for this coming season. Delta’s new non-stop flight from JFK to Bonaire is one of the new flights highlighted. To view this article, visit http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/11/09/travel/09heads.html?ref=travel.

The third article in the New York Times is featured in the “This Week Online” section under the subtitle “Interest Guides.” Bonaire is one of the two destinations highlighted for exploring the watery underworld in their Snorkeling and Diving Interest Guide. A picture of Bonaire, photographed by Alan Zane, accompanies the column. The article entitled “Underwater Adventure, Without Frills in Bonaire,” is archived from 2004 and was published again to endorse the diving in Bonaire and encourage travelers to visit Bonaire to experience the island’s underwater world that is offered to their tourists. It is an honor for Bonaire to be archived in The New York Times, as it solidifies that once again Bonaire is considered as a world-class diving and snorkeling destination in the Caribbean. To view this article, visit http://travel.nytimes.com/2004/10/31/travel/31bonaire.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1.

Caribbean Travel & Life (circulation 155,000)
As a direct result of Brooke Morton’s recent press visit, Bonaire is featured in the December 2008 edition of Caribbean Travel & Life. The article describes Brooke’s first experience landsailing and the thrills she encounters while whipping around the grounds of Bonaire. A photo of tourists landsailing accompanies this two-page story.

As a result of our work with journalist Vern O’Reily-Ramesar, Bonaire is featured on Globewriter’s Weblog throughout the duration of his time spent on island. Bonaire is the subject of 5 of Vern’s blogs entitled; Back to Bonaire, Bon Bon Bonaire, Beauty On Dusty Streets, The Great Outdoors, No Really, and Lap of Luxury. For each of his posts, Vern gives a full description of his days and the activities and site inspections in which he participated. Photos of the island accompany each of his write-ups. Vern refers to Bonaire as “beautiful/perfect little Bonaire.” To view this article, visit http://globewriter.wordpress.com:80/.

Caribbean Travel & Life (circulation 155,000)
As a direct result of our ongoing relationship with writer and former editor of Caribbean Travel & Life, Bob Friel, Bonaire is featured in the December 2008 issue of the publication. Entitled “The Top 10 Caribbean Snorkeling Parks,” Bonaire’s National Marine Park is highlighted for its commitment to the protection of its marine environment.  Sorobon in Lac Bay, 1,000 Steps, Karpata, and Klein Bonaire are mentioned for some of the most standout locations for snorkeling. Dive Friends Bonaire Announces New Programs and Enhancements for 2009

Kralendijk, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, December 8, 2008- Dive Friends Bonaire has exciting plans for visiting Bonaire divers for 2009, with new programs and other enhancements to make each dive vacation unique.

Photographic and videographic services will be augmented on December 21, 2008 when Capture Photo Bonaire joins Dive Friends at the Dive Friends @ Dive Inn location on the southern section of the oceanfront promenade. Capture will provide underwater camera rentals and sales, classes in underwater photography or videography, digital image processing, as well as camera repairs.  Having the expertise of Capture’s imaging specialists will enable guests of Dive Friends Bonaire to begin, or improve upon, their own underwater photographic endeavors, or let the experts join in on a dive to capture the moment forever in video or still photography, so divers can share their underwater vacation memories with family and friends.  There will be a Grand Opening in early 2009 to celebrate.

Dive Friends Bonaire’s two retail stores in Kralendijk have been named an authorized dealer for both ScubaPro and Uwatec, and therefore, new equipment from both manufacturers will be available in January.

For popular beach- and surf-wear, the new 2009 collection of Oceancore board shorts is available, along with new Body Glove rash guards.  The high-quality t-shirt line by Deep Down is available in the stores in January, 2009, and just in time for holiday shopping is the latest collection of Reef sandals and apparel. Coming in 2009 is a Dive Friends Bonaire Buyers Card, jointly sponsored by Reef, which will provide Dive Friends’ customers with a buying card.  After ten purchases on the card, customers will receive 10% of the total value of prior purchases off their next purchase; some restrictions apply—contact Dive Friends for more information.

For those divers who enjoy continuing their diving education, Dive Friend Bonaire’s has added a new PADI distinctive specialty to their instruction roster, entitled The PADI Shore Diver Distinctive Specialty.  Since many of Bonaire’s visitors have experience with boat diving only, this course will help familiarize participants with enjoyment of the island’s shore diving locations—there are fifty official dive sites on Bonaire’s leeward coast.  The course includes a short academic session with two dives where participants will learn the necessary skills to independently plan and conduct safe, easy, and fun shore dives.
